“Talk too much?”

“I’m a lawyer. And you know what you are?”

His mouth formed into a sneer. “You don’t get to tell me who–”

The rest of his words died on his lips as a blur barreled into him.

The gun went off as the guy flew from the force of the impact and collided with a tree. His body fell limp to the ground, even as his groan echoed around them.

“You’re fucked,” Alissia said.

Because Rynar had come to save her.

All the terror she’d been suppressing in the past few minutes came crashing into her so hard and fast, Alissia swayed on the spot. She leaned back against the tree trunk to keep from crumbling. In the distance, Rynar breathed so heavily, the muscles on his back bulged. He was snarling, the picture of a monster these fools wanted to believe he was.

But as his gaze jumped to hers, his entire demeanor changed. Gone was the murder in his obsidian eyes. Nothing but concern replaced it.

He almost teleported himself at her side, gently cradling her face.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yes.” Alissia swallowed. Her mouth was drier than ever. “Are you? Did they shoot you?”

“They tried.”

An unexpected breeze blew past them. Only it wasn’t the wind. It was Deryg, running with his Deruzian speed, and only stopping once he reached the guy who’d threatened to kill Alissia.

“What happened?” he asked.

“That’s what I want to know,” Rynar said, a bite to his voice. “You’re the head of security, figure it out. By tomorrow. I need to take Alissia home.”

Nazyn and Zaryn appeared in the clearing as well, faces tense, fangs out.

“I’m fine,” she tried to protest, even as her lungs struggled to get air inside them.

“You’re barely standing up,” Rynar said, voice low and worried. “I want to know you’re safe. The five that attacked us have been taken care of and my brothers will make sure they get answers out of them when they wake up. But there might be others skulking around.”

That, she didn’t want. Alissia doubted she could bullshit her way out of death for a second time tonight.

More Deruzians from the party appeared. Things were in control, at least here.

“Damian? And the others at the party?” she asked.

“They’re safe, guarded, and escorted off the premises right now,” Deryg said. “We’re on high alert.”

Alissia sighed in relief. Rynar was right–her knees had gone from trembling to quaking.

Finally, she nodded.

It was Rynar’s turn to sigh in relief. He exchanged a charged nod with the other Deruzians, before looking down at Alissia once more.

He seemed hesitant.

“Hold on tight,” he said gently, guiding her arms around his neck.

“Why?” Alissia asked, even as she did as he said.

“Later. I’ll answer any questions you might have–but only once we’re home. Deal?” he said.
