See? He had that special something about him that comforted her.

“That sounds like a plan. But don’t forget we have plans as well,” she whispered, cheeks heating up.

Deryg’s grimace morphed into a sly grin. “How can I forget? It’s our firstda-te.”

Kiara giggled. She couldn’t help it. Being around him was intoxicating–and the fact that he pronounced date likedatacertainly helped.

“You know what’s strange?”

“That we haven’t been on ada-teuntil now?”

“Well…yes.” Kiara tucked a strand of hair behind her ear; she always seemed to do that around him since they’d kissed, being all bashful. “I’m wondering if we ever would have if that weird Deruzian love juice hadn’t messed with our minds.”

And bodies–because hers had been onfireyesterday.

Deryg turned toward her, the heat radiating off him. He traced a single finger up her arm, sending shivers through her entire body.

His finger continued its path around her bare shoulder, across her clavicle, and up her neck, resting just underneath her chin.

Deryg gently tilted her face toward him. As their eyes met, pure electricity danced between them, igniting every single one of Kiara’s nerve endings.

“The f’tare is powerful,” he said, voice so low and rumbly, it vibrated from his chest into hers. “But it only enhances our basic urges and our cravings. It is dangerous because Deruzians have been warriors for eons. Violence runs through us, no matter how hard we have tried to temper it.”

His finger continued caressing, up her jawline. Kiara’s eyes fluttered at the sweet thrill of feeling him so close to her. Touching her. Not taking his eyes off her.

“The f’tare only lowered the walls I’ve built and made me see clearly, instinctually,” he went on, voice dropping even lower. “Iwanted to kissyou. Nobody else. If there had been any other female in this room, I would have walked away.”

His palm finally reached the back of her neck, pressing gently against the base of her skull. Kiara wanted to roll her head back and bask in his touch. It was mesmerizing.

“So you’re telling me we’ve wanted to kiss each other for ages, the f’tare just made us realize that?” she asked, barely above a whisper.

“It did for me. I’ve always been drawn to you, but I never let myself delve deeper into my attraction. For a very good reason.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s a long story. Better to delve into it at ourda-te.”

“Then it has to be a good story.”

Deryg tilted his head to the side. “It has a fantastic ending.”

“Good, we like happy endings.”

“Do you know what we like even more?” Deryg leaned forward, his lips a breath away from hers. “Kissing. May I steal you away from the rest of the world for one more minute?”

Kiara kissed him in reply.

After all, what was the harm in spending one more minute in Deryg’s arms?

DERYG

Kissing Kiara was more potent than any f’tare could ever hope to be.

Her touch, the very essence of her, intoxicated him, making him want to come back for more. The last night had been torture.

After so much time working alongside her, he didn’t understand why not having her beside him ached. It actually hurt his body and hearts to not have her by his side. There was always a tendril in his mind focused on the next moment he’d breathe the same air as her again. He’d mistaken it for familiarity. Now he knew Kiara was…Nines, this insatiable hunger for her could only mean one thing.
