Driven by fright and instinct, Kiara shook her shoulder.
Against all odds, Carol flinched.
“What in the–” she turned around, her blue eyes widening as she took in the violence around them. Her panicked gaze flew to Kiara–then the glass she’d had her head pressed against. Then, of all things, she laughed; or maybe it was a sob, Kiara couldn’t tell through the smoke. “Well, I guess my expensive hair extensions were worth their price. Who knew they doubled as a life-saving cushion.”
If Carol could joke, then she could run.
“We need to get out of here,” Kiara whispered urgently, Deryg’s words echoing in her mind.
Find cover. Hide.
With no clue where she was going, Kiara helped Carol to her feet. She was a bit wobbly, but it had to do.
“Now what?” Carol asked.
“Keep your voice down and crouch as much as you can.” Kiara instructed as she did the same. Her first instinct was to head toward the security department. During an emergency, her instinct was to run to a safe place. Apparently, Deryg’s Domain was still that kind of a space for her.
But two hectic steps later, she saw the elevator heading down had been blown to bits as well. The despair inside her grew.
Who were these people attacking them? And what the hell did they want?
Five of the hooded figures ran past the elevator shaft.
Kiara changed course instantly. Where to, she didn’t know. Far away from them.
“Good thing Matty stepped out for a cigar right before the explosion.” Carol sighed. “If I knew risking lung cancer would have kept me safe tonight, I would’ve gone with him.”
A throng of guests raced past them. “They’re invading the entire building, run!”
Where?Kiara almost cried out in desperation.
If these masked figures were already seeping into the hallways, where the hell could Kiara hide? Because she was definitely not squeezing into the bottleneck that would be waiting at the exit, to be shot off one by one.
Think, think.
Where could they go?
Just as the smoke turned thicker, the map from Deryg’s office blinked into her mind. What was it that he said? Alien Inc. had made sure to build nooks and crannies into the building. Ancient Deruzian tradition. And one of those corridors could be accessed right from the staircase.
Finally, a glimmer of hope in a sea of despair.
“This way,” she said to Carol with renowned vigor and changed course once again.
If they could access that door, then they’d end up in the Eastern wing, where Darcy’s lab was. God. Kiara hoped Darcy had enough time to get out of the building before it was infested with these gun-wielding maniacs.
All Kiara and Carol had to do was crouch underneath the fallen beam, jump over the melting ice sculpture and–
“Ouch,” Carol yelped from behind.
Kiara turned just in time to see her crumpling to the ground, holding onto her ankle.
“I knew I should’ve worn the red ones.” Carol grimaced as she ripped her broken heel off her shoe. Kiara exhaled in relief. Okay, so her ankle wasn’t broken.
But that relief quickly turned to horror as one of the hooded figures appeared behind Carol, gun raised.
He aimed it straight at Kiara.
She didn’t have time to blink.
