She was good at her job.
Period.
But no matter how many times she replayed the mantra in her head, the doubts creeped in.
Maybe she couldn’t handle everything on her own.
After all, as Kiara was reminded with every chance, her mom had supported her until she got into college.
You were a teenager.
Still…
No. She promised herself she wouldn’t think like that. It was her mom’s job to raise her, that’s what parents did.
“Then make sure it turns out like I expect it to,” her mom said, focusing on what she wanted and totally unaware of the internal crisis she’d kindled in her only daughter.
Kiara wanted to scream. Howl. Go right up into her mom’s face and roar.
This party isn’t foryou. You’re not even invited. You didn’t even care about it until fucking Carol decided to come. Your expectations do NOT matter right now.
But they did, didn’t they? For Kiara.
Mercifully, her phone began to buzz.
“I have to go, I’m getting another call,” Kiara said quickly. It didn’t matter who it was; she’d speak to the devil himself as long as she got off this call. He would probably be less critical of Kiara anyway.
“Of course you don’t have enough time for your own mother.” She sighed. “Very well.Don’tforget what we discussed. I won’t.”
No, she only forgot about things like Kiara’s birthday, which was last month.
Before she said something she would regret, Kiara switched to the other call. The event was still happening and she was on duty.
“Yes?” she replied in a terse voice that bounced off the echoey walls. Good thing everyone was outside the bathroom, running around and adding the finishing touches.
“Zdrelel here,” a gruff Deruzian voice echoed alongside hers. “The courier is saying you ordered the Deruzian shipment.”
Could this day get any more insane? “I most certainly didnot.”
“We know. But we also need your signature for the police report. He was handling highly dangerous contraband.”
“Okay, send it up and I’ll look over it.”
“The police are already here,” Zdrelel said.
Oh, no. No, no, no.
“They’re waiting for you at basement level two,” he went on, even as Kiara’s heart shrank.
Basement level two? Where Deryg commanded his security team? His domain? The one she’d never visited? And she’d have to go down there on the same day they kissed?
God help her.

KIARA
The basement level was infamous throughout Alien Inc. Before Deryg’s arrival, it was the place where old devices called faxes and moldy robot mops came to gather dust.
