They couldn’t talk here. They needed to get far away from prying eyes and ears. Conversations like these should never happen in public. Truthfully, conversations like thisdidn’thappen on Deruzia.
Because no Deruzian in his right mind would have done what Deryg had right before he’d come to Earth.
He bowed slightly to Leyra, as was becoming. Then he motioned toward the hallway stretching to the left. “This way.”
There was no point in pretending this wasn’t the worst thing that could happen tonight.
Deryg’s past had come to haunt him–and everyone at Alien Inc. had just witnessed it.

KIARA
The problem with hosting an event that tall, buff aliens attended was that humans tended to get lost in the decadent fray. She maneuvered between the large bodies, taking care not to step on any sparkling robes or those jagged metal chains the Xirians had used to adorn their outfits with.
But no matter how hard she looked, there was no sign of Darcy’s blunt bangs. Damn it, why did she have to be so short and cute?
“Have you seen Darcy?” she asked Zaryn and Lily as she passed them, interrupting their debate about whether the party would turn a profit in six or five months.
“She went toward the balcony with Nazyn. Can’t miss them, he’s in a mood tonight,” Zaryn told her before turning back to Lily. “My love, I have just heard the Xirian ambassador scoff at the idea of paying Earth’s mandatory fees for commerce. It willtake a while before they come around. Six months and not a day less.”
“Deruzians and their pessimism. You’re lucky you’re so charming.” Lily shook her head with a smile just as Kiara dashed into the crowd again.
Zaryn was wrong, because Kiara totally missed Nazyn and Darcy. In a sea of Deruzian horns, Nazyn was just one more pair to her eyes; the only horns she could make out in a set of millions were Deryg’s. Especially after she’d grabbed hold of them and rode his face like her life depended on it.
A blush creeped into her cheeks. Whether from the scorching hot memories or practically running in heels, she couldn’t tell.
Nazyn and Darcy weren’t next to the balcony, either. But Rynar and Alissia stood just a few feet away, laughing under their breaths.
“I think Yakirian might have taken a liking to Mary,” Rynar muttered as Kiara approached. “No Deruzian lovescup-cakesso much.”
Alissia giggled. “You haven’t tasted Mary’s cupcakes, then.”
To be fair, Yakirian had been visiting the dessert table one too many times for a Deruzian’s digestive tract, but Kiara had more pressing issues than the CEO’s munchies.
“Where are Nazyn and Darcy?” Kiara wheezed. She was more out of breath than she’d thought. Maybe it was time to start her yoga sessions again.
Rynar stilled for a few moments. Then his penetrating gaze found hers. “About twenty feet to the right of the northern stairs. He’s enchanting some businessmen with the wonders of Darcy’s new algorithm.”
Kiara was already mid-turn when Rynar’s gaze darkened. “What’s wrong?”
What wasn’t wrong? This party looked like a grand success, but trouble was brewing underneath its glistening ceiling.
“Ask Deryg,” she said over her shoulder, delving into the crowd again.
Please be right, please be right, she chanted in her mind as she approached the stairs.
When she saw Darcy leaning against the banister, staring longingly as Nazyn gestured widely to a group of humans and he elogized her wits, Kiara broke into an actual run.
Thank God for Deruzians’ super hearing.
She gently grasped Darcy’s shoulder, startling her. “I need your help.”
Darcy’s gaze turned from shock to determination as she scanned Kiara’s frantic eyes. She nodded. “How can I help you?”
Kiara almost cried with relief then and there. She knew she could count on Darcy’s efficiency. Ever since they’d had that issue at the tech forum with Darcy and Richard, her lying, cheating ex-boyfriend, Kiara had taken a liking to her.
“How fast can you search through our internal transfer platform?” she asked in one breath. “Access the code and find any anomaly.”
