Did her mom think so little of her that she’d throw her under the bus in front of literally anyone?

That same icy sensation that appeared whenever her mom called slithered down her spine. But now it pulsed with rage.

Kiara shouldn’t have been surprised. She knew her mom was strict and selfish in her love. Yet here she was, seething and disappointed.

She needed to get away from Carol before she said something she would regret when she calmed down.

Her eyes scanned the crowd again, this time looking for something, anything to help her excuse herself from this conversation. Then she saw Deryg. The sight of him warmed her up, diluting some of her rage.

But then he scowled. Not at her, of course, but at the tall Deruzian next to him. Come to think of it, they looked similar.

Deryg said something and showed his fangs.Notgood. This was the first time Kiara had seen him enraged.

What the hell was going on?

“Excuse me, it seems some guest has an issue with finding the bathroom,” Kiara said half-heartedly to Carol, managing a ghost of a smile. “Enjoy the party, see you later.”

Kiara began walking in Deryg’s direction, but before she got there, a beautiful Deruzian female appeared. She floated in a silver dress that seemed crafted from water itself, her hair braided in intricate lines between her horns. Everything about her was gorgeous and ethereal.

Deryg stood there frozen, looking at her. Then hewalkedaway with her, with their Deruzian speed.

By the time Kiara’s human legs reached that spot, Deryg and the female were long gone. Her heart began to pound as tingles raced up her legs. Were ants eating her alive? Because it sure felt like it.

Okay, deep breaths, Earhart. There must be a very logical explanation for all of this.

Kiara was going to find out what that explanation was before she imploded.

“Hello,” she said to the very tall, very imposing Deruzian Deryg had been scowling at. “I don’t think we’ve met, I am Kiara Earhart, I organized this event.”

With plenty of help and jumping through too many loopholes, but, in theory, she had.

The Deruzian turned his silver eyes her way. God, they looked so much like Deryg’s.

A lightbulb lit up in her mind. Damn, was this the famed brother? No wonder Deryg had been grimacing at him. What was his name? Rydan? Redan?

“I believe the human custom is to say I am enchanted,” he said. “I am Rexan Ka’Nar.”

Yep, the brother. She understood why Deryg wasn’t exactly keen on Rexan. He had this arrogant air to him, from the way he refused to tilt his chin down to look at her, to the harsh line of his broad shoulders. He looked about as wound up as her mom, and that was saying something.

“Pleasure to meet you. I’m a bit confused, though. I don’t remember putting your name on the list,” she said.

“But you did invite a representative from the Eastern quadrant.” Rexan’s lips turned into something that pretended to be a smile, but lacked all warmth. “I am said representative.”

That sounded shady, but okay. He was Deryg’s brother, he wouldn’t try to infiltrate the event…would he?

“And the female who was with you?” Kiara asked quickly, before she lost her courage under her intense gaze.

“Leyra Ga’Haar, my companion for the evening,” he said, easing Kiara’s worries–which then returned with a vengeance, turning her world upside down, when Rexan said, “And Deryg’s mate.”

DERYG

The only time Deryg had seen Leyra before he’d left, they’d both been as disoriented as two Deruzians could be.

Right before coming to Earth, his brother had informed him he was to be mated with a female he had never met. The contract had already been signed, his fate sealed, Rexan had said.

Deryg had refused. He’d shown up at Leyra’s lavish family residence and asked to speak with her, for the first time in his existence.
