Where was the blood?
“Are those–” Rexan’s eyes widened at the chaos they left lying on the floor.
Deryg understood.
He couldn’t quite believe his eyes either.
“Yes,” he replied grimly.
He had said no human could get past his security team–but he’d never expected this.
Shocked, Deryg saw the bullet heading straight for him at the last moment.
He wasn’t fast enough.
It seared the skin and muscles on his right shoulder, scorching the nerves in his entire body.
The pain was unbearable. It sent him to his knees.
But Kiara’s sudden scream burned deeper and more painfully.

KIARA
Kiara had never been more scared in her life.
Her muscles coiled with tension. Each one of her senses was strained, hyper aware of her surroundings; Carol pouring the sickly green liquid onto the floor, Darcy typing up a storm, Leyra setting up the system by the back wall.
Kiara’s hands shook as she laid down the cables. Less than a foot away, the wall was caving in, rammed by the bastards beyond it. Each time they struck the metal, she flinched.
This has to work, a voice said in her mind. It got louder with each bang.
The lab was a mess.
They’d raided every cabinet as quickly as humanly–and Deruzianly–possible. Broken beakers were strewn across the floor, between robot parts.
“Universe, please let me survive, so I can finally finish building those robots,” Darcy muttered under her breath as she gazed at the chaos in her laboratory.
We have to survive, Kiara thought as another bang vibrated through the walls. The crunching sound of metal giving way echoed in the laboratory.
Kiara gulped.
They were coming.
A sudden sense of calm took over her.
Was this accepting her fate? No, because every thought rebelled against the idea. She wasnotgoing to die today.
Then what–
A roar pierced the air, menacing and formidable.
Despite the fear, the adrenaline, and the wounds, Kiara smiled.
Deryg had come for her. Like he’d promised.
That’s why she’d calmed down. She didn’t know how, but she’d felt his presence.
