The way he looks at her.
The little touches they give to each other that look extremely affectionate.
The one time she leaned up and kissed him on the cheek while we were waiting for our dinners.
It’s all enough to make me sick.
As I watch Sebastian slow dancing with Ariana, I know he feels my stare because he turns just the slightest and we lock eyes across the room. It’s a quick, single glance, but it’s enough to let me know he hasn’t entirely forgotten I’m here.
“Ok, so can I ask a personal question?” Jennifer plops down in the seat next to me, forcing my focus from Sebastian to her.
With four glasses of wine in me, I’m feeling brave. “Of course.”
“Well, tell me if this is out of line,” she pauses and panic shoots to the surface.
Fuck.
What if she saw me staring at Sebastian?
What if she asks what’s going on?
Fuck.
Fuck.
Double Fuck.
Playing it as cool as I can, I turn my full attention to her just as she begins to speak.
“Where did you get that dress? Who makes it because you look absolutely stunning tonight? I am so sorry if it’s inappropriate, but myself and some of other women have been gawking at it all night. It’s the most beautiful dress we’ve ever seen, and you look gorgeous in it.”
Relief floods my mind, and I’m shocked at the compliment. “Thank you. You all are too kind. It’s from Saks. It’s a Safiyaa.”
“Well, you look stunning in it and let me tell you, everyone is saying how gorgeous you look.”
I do my best to give my attention to Jennifer, but I can’t stop thinking about Arianna and Sebastian slow dancing together.
Forcing my focus on Jennifer, I smile and try to appreciate her kind words.
“Thank you so much, Jennifer. I appreciate it.”
“You’re very welcome. I just wanted to tell you that before I head out for the night. Some of us are going to grab a drink at a bar around the corner, do you want to go with us?”
Glancing around, I see that everyone is finally starting to leave. Thank god. I need to get out of here.
As sweet as Jennifer’s offer to join her is, I can’t say I want to go anywhere but home to Brielle. I’m done watching the Sebastian and Arianna show for the night.
“Thank you for offering, but I have a date with my best friend after this.” I chuckle softly. “She’s feeling a little neglected that I went out without her tonight.”
“I totally understand, but the offer stands. If you and your friend want to meet up with us later, here’s my number.” She scribbles her number on a napkin and hands it to me. “We always have room for more.”
Jennifer gets up from the seat next to me and walks away from the table, leaving me the sulk in peace.
I probably should go out with her and the other ladies from the office, but I’m done with tonight.
I’m done with the situation, and I need my best friend and Netflix.
