Scarlett stirred next to me and her eyelids began to flutter, fighting to stay open as she scrunched her face in contempt. She pulled my legs closer to her chest and let out a yawn as she rubbed her eyes.

She was gorgeous.

The sight of her chestnut-brown hair splayed across her pillow, paired with the bleary-eyed smile she gave me, made my heart lurch inside my chest.

“When were you planning on telling me you have a foot fetish?” I teased.

She grabbed the throw pillow next to her and attempted to throw it at my head, but it flew right past me. “I do not have a foot fetish!”

“Care to explain why you cuddled with my feet all night then?” I quirked a questioning eyebrow and the corners of my lips turned up to a smile.

“I did not cuddle with your feet!” she scoffed.

“Oh really? ’Cause I’m pretty sure righty made it to second base, didn’t you, big guy?” I wiggled my toes which just so happened to be inches from her face.

Her head flew back and an infectious laugh poured from her lips. “Get your mind out of the gutter, Abbott.”

She had no idea how deep my mind was in the gutter right now.

No fucking idea.

My morning wood ached like a motherfucker just by looking at her, and now talking about kinks with her? I was going to blow a load any minute if we didn’t change the subject.

“Ironic coming from the one with the foot fetish,” I shot back as I moved to stick my big toe up her nose. Scarlett pushed my foot away from her face with an eye roll.

“There is a penthouse suite waiting for you in hell,” she muttered just loud enough for me to hear.

“Do I get a first-class ticket as well?” I bargained.

I liked that she could take the banter just as well as she could dish it out.

“If I was cuddling with your feet all night then you must not have minded since you didn’t dare to move them, huh?”

“I can neither confirm nor deny, Red.”

If only she knew how much I liked having her close to me. We’d grown closer over the last few weeks together but she hadn’t given me a reason to believe that we were anything other than friends.

I was willing to be patient though.

“You know, pleading the fifth is for the guilty.”

“Then I must be a criminal, huh?”

She tugged the blanket up around her neck and snuggled into it. “In other news, you’re not a blanket hog. I’ll be sure to give your next girlfriend a glowing review.”

Mynextgirlfriend?

I hated that I had to keep reminding myself that this thing between me and Scarlett was fake. Somewhere along the way, the lines had gotten blurred for me because these days, more than ever, my heart was having a hard time filtering between the ruse and reality.

I didn’t know much, but I knew one thing for certain after waking up with her for the first time.

I wanted to wake up next to her again.

And again.

And again.

Every day for the rest of my fucking life.
