Staring at my reflection, I inhaled a deep, steadying breath and smoothed down the front of my dress with my palms. “You can do this.”
Mustering up every ounce of confidence in my being, I exited the bathroom and strode into the living room with a big smile on my face. But my smile instantly dropped at the sight of Mae and October standing chest to chest with their faces inches apart as they spit vile insults back and forth at each other.
Oh my god.
“How did it feel winning a League Bowl where the second-string quarterback scored the winning touchdown?“ Mae gritted out between her teeth. “Your poor little sprained ankle gonna keep you on the sidelines again this season?”
“How did it feel getting kicked out of your modeling agency for being a bitch?“ October jabbed, inching forward slowly until Mae’s back touched the wall. My eyes bounced back and forth between the two of them.
“I didn’t get kicked out, you imbecile. I quit!”
“Pretty surethat’s something someone who got fired would say.”
The tension between the two of them was electric. Hell, even I caught the buzz of it from across the room. The only thing that would make watching them argue better is if I had fresh popcorn in hand.
Maybe if the two of them had a really good hate fuck their issues could be resolved. A lot could be solved with a hate fuck. And with two people as hot as they were and with tension this thick, they could make millions from a sex tape.
“Alright, boys and girls, let’s settle down.” I butted in between the two of them.Mae’s face was cherry red and her brows grew together in an angry frown. Unfortunately for her, I really didn’t have the energy to deal with being a murder witness tonight.
October stepped back, finally breaking his stare from Mae and giving me a once-over. “Scar, you look amazing.”
“Thank you.” A blush rose to my cheeks and I could’ve sworn I heard Mae mockingly repeating October’s compliment under her breath.
“We should get going. Wouldn’t want to be late, would we?” Ironic coming from him, being that he was nearly half an hour late picking me up. His hand rested against the small of my back as he opened Mae’s enormous front door and led us outside.
There was no spark with his touch. No swirl of emotions in my chest. My skin didn’t buzz in anticipation the way it did with Abel. Like I was going to perish if he took his hands off of me.
With October I felt nothing. Absolutely nothing.
“Great seeing you, March. We’ll have to do this again sometime soon,” he called back to her.
“I’d rather be brutally murdered than have to have another conversation with you,” Mae muttered just loud enough for me to pick up on her few choice words. I threw her a scowl over my shoulder.
“You know Mae is cursing you out right now, don’t you?” I lifted a brow at him as I followed him down the front porch steps.
“You sure she isn’t flipping me off too?”
Peering over my shoulder, I let out a laugh when I looked back to see Mae standing on her front porch with two middle fingers sticking upward, mouthing something to herself before pressing her lips into a tight line.
“Must take three decades to stop a feud,” I quipped as October opened the passenger door of his truck for me. He let out a laugh before shutting the door and rounding the hood.
I gazed out the windshield at October while he called out something to Mae that made her storm into the house and slam the front door shut.
Damn.
October slid into the driver’s seat and turned the key in the ignition of his seemingly fresh-off-the-lot truck.
“What’d you say to her?”
“I told her that her breath still smelled like the worms she used to eat on the playground.”
“Oh my god.” I shouldn’t have laughed because she was my sister, but biting back my laughter only made it funnier. Before long, a howl of laughter spilled from my lips, sparking October to join in too.
If it came down to choosing between the two of them, I would always choose Mae’s side without question. Every time. But she did have a worm-eating phase when we were five, so I didn’t exactly have the grounds to defend her.
“I’m glad to see you laughing, Scar.” October reached across the console and placed his hand over the top of mine. His face softened and the corner of his lips pulled down.
I hated that look.
