“No.”

“The ones working are the criminals?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Killing an entire organization would be too much of a hassle. We can’t let these guys back into the public, they will just start over somewhere else. So now we can keep tabs on them, make some extra cash, and it is a kind of poetic justice.”

“Killing them would be a mercy.”

“A mercy we will not afford them.”

Aria’s body relaxes and lets me pull her back into me.

“Still trust me?”

“Yeah, I guess.” She smiles up at me. I lean down and kiss her gently. This conversation could have gone so poorly, and it almost did. For a conversation with little to no preparation, I say it went well.

“Would you like to watch your show now?”

“Nope, you had said the twin brother’s girlfriend.” I nod. “Like the younger twin’s girlfriend or the youngertwins’girlfriend? Like are both twins dating this girl?”

Out of everything we discussed, this is what she wants to revisit?

“Both of the twins are dating the same girl.”

“Interesting. How much information do you have on that?”

“How much information do I have on the love life of two nineteen-year-olds? None. They are literal children.”

“I am only three years older than them,” she says with the biggest smile.

Fuck, she’s right.

“Ok, I’m turning your show on. I’m done with this conversation.” I laugh as I press play on the remote. Let's focus on someone else’s relationship drama.

Chapter

Twenty-One

Aria

Last night was a lot. Between the anxiety attack and finding out that Theo is in fact part of the mob, I learned a metric shit ton. Unfortunately, now that I have had time to sleep on it, I have more questions.

I walk down to the kitchen and see Theo sitting, having his coffee on the island.

“Good morning.” He puts his phone down to look at me.

“Morning.”

“Hey, come here.” He turns his body toward me, and as soon as I’m within reach, he pulls me into him. “What’s wrong?”

“Can we talk about last night?”

“Of course.” I sit on the barstool next to him. He keeps his hand on me, not wanting to lose contact.

“Your job.” I fidget with my nails. “It puts me in danger? Does that mean I am in danger from The Court, or because of The Court?”
