She glanced at Caleb, who winked at her. His mother beamed. “Once you and Caleb become settled, you will have to come visit us in America.”
Celeste asked, “You aren’t staying in England?”
“I’d planned to, but after giving it some thought, I realized New York City is my home. It has been for over twenty years. I miss it.”
Caleb mentioned to her that his mother had been different over here, so Celeste was glad she was going back to where she was happiest. Celeste smiled at her. “We will have to make it a priority.”
Mrs. Monteith smiled. “Enjoy each other first. The first year of marriage should be about the two of you.”
“Thank you,” she said.
Courtney opened a newspaper and smiled. “Your betrothal announcement is in the paper.”
Caleb and Celeste agreed they would marry sooner rather than later. Neither wanted to be apart. Their wedding would be in three weeks. Caleb grinned at her. “Nervous?”
She shook her head. “Never.”
His brother smiled. “The first marriage for the Monteith family. I will have to write Cory and tell him you lost your heart.”
Celeste flushed, and Caleb said, “I won’t deny it.”
She was sad that they were all leaving after the wedding, as Celeste liked their closeness with Caleb. Still, they were already making plans to visit America in a year. That was if a pregnancy didn’t get in the way.
They’d decided they would start trying for a baby immediately. Caleb wanted as many as they could have. Celeste would be happy with two. Time would tell. She was thirty, and Caleb was thirty-one. Neither were young.
Her betrothed held out his arm. “How about a walk in the gardens?”
She nodded. They made their way outside, and Caleb asked, “Are you nervous about meeting with the Burrows tomorrow?”
Celeste's stomach clenched. She was. “I don’t know what to expect.”
“Whatever happens, we will deal with it together,” he murmured before kissing her knuckles.
Gratitude filled her that Caleb was so wonderful. “You are the best soon-to-be husband ever.”
“I am,” he said.
She stopped and rolled her eyes. “Isn’t that a little cocky, Lord Haven.”
“Perhaps, but it is only because you make me want to be a good husband.”
She smiled at him, her heart warming. She grasped his jacket and pulled him in for a kiss. “Thank you.”
Chapter 16
Caleb sat with Celeste, Devons, and Derry in a carriage outside of Lord Burrows’ home. He reached over and squeezed her hand. “No matter what happens, I’m here for you.”
“As are we,” Devons and Derry said in unison. They’d insisted on joining them for this meeting.Celeste smiled at them, “Thank you.”
She took a deep breath and said, “I’m ready.”
He knocked on the roof of the carriage, and the door opened. They all stepped down and made their way to the front door. The butler was waiting for them as they reached the townhouse. They stepped into the foyer, and Caleb watched Celeste take in her father’s home. A man who didn’t know she existed until only a few days ago.
The butler said, “Lord and Lady Burrows are waiting in the drawing room.”
Quietly, they walked to the room, and once there, the butler announced them. Lord Burrows turned to Celeste, his facial expression shifting continuously between sadness and amazement.
Celeste bowed. “My lord.”
