“Aw, fuck,” I say, climbing onto my knees behind her. I can’t resist her in this position, giving me all the power and control, her ass in the air. I settle myself behind her, positioning myselfjust there. My hands are on her hips, holding her, and I’m about to thrust into her when the doorbell rings again. This time, however, it’s followed by a very familiar voice.
“Liza! You awake? We said noon!” Vinny’s voice sounds far away as Liza looks up at me with horrified eyes, and I freeze.
“Ohmigod, you need tohide. I completely forgot I had plans with them today,” she whisper-yells. “Coming!” she yells. “Just getting dressed.”
“What the fuck, Liza?” I say in a low voice, adrenaline coursing through my veins. I’m rooted to the bed, unable to move. Meanwhile, she’s pulling on an entire outfit in less time than it takes for a Formula 1 car to get its wheels changed mid-race (I make a mental note to commit this moment to memory so I can bring it up next time she tells me she needs a couple of more minutes to get ready).
The doorbell rings incessantly now, and I hear Danielle say, “Vinny, stop. You’re acting like a child.”
I jump off the bed and step on something sharp and painful. I bite my lip to stifle a yelp and inspect my foot. I just stepped on the spikiest heel I’ve ever seen in my life.
“Careful!” she hisses. “Those are Manolos!” Like it’s supposed to mean something to me. What the hell is she talking about?
“Stay here,” she says. “Don’t make a sound once I open the front door.” She walks out of the bedroom, shutting the door behind her, giving me a nice final view of her denim-clad ass.
I drag my pants on as I hear her open the door and greet her brother, sister-in-law, and niece and nephew. I hear Vinny’s kids through the door, throwing themselves at their aunt, so happy to see her.
“What took you so long?” Vinny asks her, irritated. “You were supposed to be ready by now to go to the zoo with us.”
“Hey, guys,”I hear her greet the twins, completely ignoring her brother. “I missed you.”
My stomach drops when I realize I left my shoes out there.
FUUUUUCK.
I pray Liza saw them before opening the door and had the good sense to hide them somewhere just in time.
“So, we gonna see this new apartment of yours now or what?” Vinny asks. “I think the only person who’s seen it is Matt,” he mutters. “You need to give us a tour.”
Liza laughs awkwardly. “How about we do it when we come back? I’m starving. Let’s have lunch before we go to the zoo.”
I need Liza to get them out of the house ASAP. If Vinny catches me here, I’m a dead man. If he catches me half-naked…well, I don’t even want to think about that. “Seriously, Vinny. Don’t.”She sounds nervous now, like she’s on death row. It dawns on me that they must be ignoring her request and taking a look around the apartment. Suddenly, I hear her high-pitched voice yell, “No! Don’t go into my bedroom, please! It’s too messy!” I hide quickly in her closet as quietly as possible, taking the rest of my clothes with me. The space is small and packed with her clothes and shoes, making it impossible for me to stand here comfortably. I’m standing on my toes, supporting myself on the door frame with one hand and holding my jacket and shirt in the other. I think I may be having a heart attack, but at least I’ll be surrounded by her comforting signature scent when I die.
“It’s not so disorganized,” I hear Danielle’s voice in the bedroom. I’m sweating bullets now, panicking. Maybe it really is best to just fucking own up to this. This seems so childish.
“Seriously, it is. I’ll show you another day.” She sounds so anxious, and I wish I could ask her to try and do a better job at keeping her cool.
“Liza,” I hear Vinny call her from far away. “Can you come here? I need to ask you something about the kitchen.” I sigh as I hear steps retreat away, thinking they’ve both left the bedroom, but the closet door immediately flies open. I freeze at the sight of Danielle, and she gasps in shock.
“What is it?” I hear Vinny ask her.
“Shh, please,” I beg.
“Uh, nothing, nothing! Just shocked by the small amount of closet space Liza has, is all.”
This is horrible. I’m shirtless, shoeless, and hiding in a closet. This is definitely not a good look for me.
“Whatever, she has too much shit, anyway,” he says in response with a snort. I hear him say something to Liza, but my focus shifts exclusively to the woman in front of me—the one with the ability to rat me out and blow my cover.
“Iknewit,” she whispers with a smile. “I saw some men’s shoes by the door, and then I freaked when I walked into the bedroom and noticed that this entire room smells like sex. Which is absolutely gross, by the way. I mean, how many times did you do it last night? Don’t answer that. But also, good job.” She smiles.
I groan. “He didn’t see the shoes, did he?”
“No, I kicked them over behind the door without him noticing,” she says with a proud smile. The gratitude I feel for Liza’s sister-in-law in this moment is immeasurable.
“Thank you,” I mouth.
“You’re welcome. Now get back into the closet. I’ll try to get us out of here as fast as possible.” She gently closes the door in my face.
