I turned back to Kennedy and smiled. I really did appreciate her for being such an amazing friend.

“Thanks, Kenni, for everything.”

“Don’t thank me. You’ve always been there for me, and I intend to do the same. Now go get some rest. I can manage here on my own.”

I quickly gathered my belongings and headed out of the office. I texted Ahmad to tell him my plan just in case I overslept. I wouldn’t want him to be worried.

He responded and let me know that it was a good idea, and he would see me later.

It was the heart emoji at the end that had my own heart fluttering and my brain overthinking everything between us. It’s always difficult to dissect text messages… and this little heart emoji was driving me the hell crazy.

Go get some sleep, Jameela.

I tried to block everything out as I rode to Kennedy’s house to go to sleep.

Corin jumped on my ass as soon as I pulled up and picked her up from the Arrivals Lane. She wanted to know where her nephew was, what was going on with his mother, what mom said about my situation, and on and on.

I had to tell her to chill the hell out then dropped her ass off at my house so I could go pick up Jameela and Ahmir.

Of course, she wanted to go, but I immediately vetoed that request. I wanted Jameela to at least have a peaceful car ride before being stressed out by my sister.

Once I arrived at Jameela’s the nanny was there with Ahmir and Jameela had yet to arrive.

She’d been extremely tired since she returned to work. I knew I needed to be cautious on how I approached the situation, but she really didn’t need to work if she didn’t want to. Taking care of her and Ahmir, and also keeping the nanny, wouldn’t even put a dent in my pockets.

I didn’t want her to over work herself, especially if she didn’t need to, but something in me told me she wasn’t just going to accept me taking care of her.

“Hi Ms. Cara,” I greeted the nanny as I went to pick Ahmir up from his swing.

The feeling that overtook me when he looked at me never ceased to amaze me. The little guy quickly became my world, and I would do anything to keep him and his mama happy.

“Hi dear. Jameela just called and said she was on her way back. She slept longer than planned at Kennedy’s house. I told her to stop fussing and take her time, but you know that girl.”

I smiled at Ms. Cara, “Yes, ma’am I do. Hopefully I will be able to get her to slow down.”

“Mm huh… sure.”

Ms. Cara had only been with us for a short period of time, but she already knew how stubborn Jameela was. So, I just chuckled at her response.

Jameela came bursting through the door, like she knew we were talking about her.

“Baby, where’s the fire?” I asked.

I had to remember to remind myself that we weren’t actually in a relationship, but the way I felt for her… I just couldn’t hide it. So, it often showed through my greetings. I was always catching myself calling herbabyor giving her a kiss when I walked into her apartment.

The shit was confusing as hell, and I was ready to tell her that I done fell in love with her ass.

“I’m so sorry I’m late. I didn’t realize how tired I was,” she said as she took Ahmir from my arms.

“Jameela, it’s okay. You needed some rest. No one is mad at you for that. Ms. Cara has things under control.” I wanted to say,and you don’t have to work so much. But I wisely left that thought in my head. She wasn’t about to curse my ass out.

Jameela was fiery when she felt like she was being told to do something, or that she couldn’t do something. I wasn’t about to step into that minefield, especially before going to see my sister.

“I know… I just…” she trailed off.
