Instinctively, I search for the enemy.
It’s just the two of us.
She’s shaking violently in my arms.
“Take your time,” I coax.
She wriggles out of my grasp and slams into me. She’s holding on to me so tightly, it’s almost impossible to breathe.
“I’m here, sweetness. You have nothing to fear. I’ll protect you no matter what,” I say. “Tell me what happened.”
“I— I—” she hiccups. I don’t rush her. She clings even harder to me. “I was so scared I was going to die and never see you again.”
Her words freeze my heart.
