“I already have a deputy on it,” Josh said. “What you need to do is get some rest and food so we can continue our search.”
“But we need to get back to work and start making this circumstantial evidence become direct evidence. After wasting time surveilling today, we know the Rays are into something fishy, but that doesn’t lead us to my grandfather and drug running. Or Doug’s killer. Or anything.”
“I know. Let’s get some food and figure out our next step.”
“Or let’s get to work and stop messing around. Maybe you should quit telling me what to do. Maybe we can eat when Pops comes home.”
“I know you’re tired and I’m sorry if I’m coming across the wrong way. I just know I’m hungry and we’ll think better with food. We’ll figure out our next steps while we eat. Okay?”
“Okay.” Maya gave in, knowing Josh was right. She was exhausted and needed to recharge. “Let’s get something at the Black Bear Café.”
“You mean the only restaurant in town? Sure. That sounds good.”
“God, you’re annoying. I’ll meet you there.”
“What’s wrong with you?”
Maya ignored Josh. She strode out, letting the door slam behind her.
Bobbi bounced around in the truck as she navigated the back roads. She’d be glad to get to her destination and not have to deal with this Jeep trail anymore. She ground the truck gears as she downshifted and pulled the vehicle to the right to avoid a large boulder. She hoped the load wasn’t getting bounced around too much—she didn’t need any of the bricks breaking open, especially since she was running behind after placing all the trackers.
The trackers in the drugs would help give the DEA more information as far as Lana’s distribution chain. They wanted to nail the person at the top, and if Carson thought that was really going to be him, he had a lot to learn about this business. Lana wouldn’t go down without a fight.
Suddenly, an ATV shot out in front of her and parked near the side of the road. Bobbi was ready to yell at the person when the driver took his helmet off.
Carson.
Bobbi froze. This wasn’t good. What was he doing here?
She felt under her jacket where the butt of the Sig Sauer sat. Reassured, she put the truck in Park and climbed out. “What’s wrong?” she asked Carson.
“Just wanted to check in with you,” Carson said. “I heard from Lana’s person you hadn’t arrived yet. What’s taking you so long?”
“It’s not like I can travel a normal speed on these roads.”
“I need to know something.”
“What?” Bobbi put her hands on her hips like she was pouting, but she wanted her hands near her gun.
“I want to know who you are.”
Adrenaline surged through Bobbi.Use your training and talk your way out of this.“That’s a silly question.”
Before Bobbi could say anything more, Carson pulled his pistol and aimed it at her.
“Babe,” Bobbi said. “What’s wrong? Why are you doing that?”
“I think you know what’s wrong. Keep your hands where I can see them.”
“Why are you acting this way?”
“Seriously?” Carson asked.
Bobbi could see his hand shaking. “Just calm down.”
“You deceived me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bobbi said.
