Juniper stared out the window, and Maya heard a low whine come from her.
“Rad dog,” Dustin said.
Maya tried not to roll her eyes. “Thanks. Listen, we need you to tell us the truth. Did you see anything? Anyone while you were out hiking today?”
“No, man. I was just out being one with nature, you know? I didn’t see anyone.”
Maya nodded, and then she and Josh walked away to chat where Dustin couldn’t hear them. “I actually believe him,” she said.
“I do too,” Josh said.
“This ties into our case. You know it. I know it. It’s just a matter of who killed her and why. Was it one of the Rays? Or is it our Russian tourist friend? Either way, this has to tie into my grandfather’s disappearance too.”
“We still don’t know that all this ties into your grandfather’s disappearance,” Josh said. “But I agree that Bobbi’s death was probably caused by the Rays or the Russian. I’m sure that’s who she was investigating even though she never told us.”
Maya looked at her cell phone. She had spotty service, which was why Dustin and the dispatcher had switched to texting. At least they had radio service. “Let’s radio dispatch, see if we can get a deputy up here to secure the scene. When we get back into reliable cell phone service, we can call the DEA and let them know. Maybe we can get some information out of them about Bobbi’s investigation and the Rays. Then I’m going out to the Ray Ranch and demanding that they let us look around.”
“That’ll go over really well.” Josh raised an eyebrow.
“Okay, then Juniper and I will sneak in and I’ll have her look for my grandfather. She’ll let me know if he’s at the Ray Ranch. You have any other suggestions?”
“Let’s do the first part and then see if I can talk the judge into giving us a warrant. You know, stay legal and not lose our jobs? Especially if Miranda has a match to that print. She was going to call me, but as you mentioned, cell service is iffy here.”
“What do we do with him?” Maya nodded toward Dustin.
“As soon as my deputy gets here, I’ll take him back to town. Ask to get some more information and then let him go. I don’t think he’s our guy, but I want to make sure we can get in touch with him.”
“It’s a plan. I’m getting going. Daylight is a-wasting.”
Juniper barked in agreement.
Chapter Forty
Carson strode to the weapons room. Cody was trailing him like a duckling following its mother.
Carson had sent the men out on different tasks—the main one was following Lana. He needed more intel on her. He should have shot her when he’d had the chance.
He felt better now that Bobbi was dead. That had to be his leak, only one thing kept bothering him—he didn’t think Bobbi stole the money or the product. There was someone else in his crew he couldn’t trust. Carson had to figure that out before Lana came back. Was it someone close to him? Like Cody? Or Jenna? They knew what family meant and that you never betrayed family. Although sometimes he wondered about Jenna. She was so damn obsessed with getting back to college. As if that would change her life.
Then there was Cody. Lately Cody had been leaving at odd times, and after finding all the drug paraphernalia, Carson knew that he showed all the signs of using. Then there was that stupid stunt he’d pulled at the bar with the fed. At least Bobbi and Jenna had pulled him out of there.
He had to start with questioning Cody. Jenna would be next. It would break his heart if his children were betraying him. But he would deal with it. He always did.
Carson pulled down a rifle and handed it to Cody. “You need to keep this with you. You’ll need protection with Lana coming back.”
“Got it,” Cody said.
“You took care of things?” Carson said.
“What do you mean? Bobbi?” Cody asked.
“You buried the body? No one will find it?”
“Uh, yeah. It’s all good.”
“Don’t lie to me, son.” Carson stepped closer. “You know I don’t like liars. You saw what happened to Bobbi when she lied to me, and I loved her. Tell me the truth—did you bury the body?”
“I didn’t have time to bury it, but I hid it where no one would ever find it.”
