She thought about ignoring Jenna as anger coursed through her.Jenna is my best suspect for Doug’s killer. I should play the game. This may be my only opportunity to get answers.
Maya took a deep breath, hoping to settle some of her emotions.“It’s Juniper’s training. We work on situations like this in training so that they bite when they need to protect their handler. Doug did a great job with her training.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Maya helped Jenna hobble to her feet and cited her Miranda rights, so she could legally be questioned. But would Jenna give her answers? “How long were you and Doug together?”
“None of your business.”
“It must not have been that serious,” Maya said. She hoped to get Jenna upset and maybe talking more. “I mean, I was his best friend. He told me everything but never mentioned you.”
“Maybe you two weren’t as close as you thought,” Jenna said through clenched teeth as she continued to hobble down the mountainside.
“Oh, we were. Doug and I were in love. Did he tell you that? We talked about getting married at one point,” Maya said.I need to keep her talking. Lying about my relationship with Doug may be the key to getting information out of Jenna.
“Yeah, but then you went off and joined the military. You broke his heart. I fixed it.”
“I don’t know about that, but I do know he was going to pop the question to me.” Maya pulled the ring from her pocket. She’d been carrying it with her for good luck.If I can get Jenna mad at me, she might confess to being Doug’s killer too.“See? That was for me.”
Jenna stopped abruptly and Juniper cocked her head, looking to Maya, muscles tense waiting to see if she needed to assist. Maya was grateful for Juniper’s presence and she urged Jenna to keep moving, but she was frozen in place.
“A ring!” she said.
“Yeah. A ring. He was going to pop the question.”
“Did he tell you that?” Jenna whispered.
“No. I put the pieces together when I went and picked up Juniper’s things from his house.”
“What makes you think that ring was for you? It was for me.”
“No, I don’t think so. I’m quite sure Doug was going to ask me.”
“Screw you,” Jenna said, pushing herself into Maya.
Maya slightly lost her balance but fought to stay on her feet. She couldn’t give Jenna the upper hand. Juniper growled and locked her eyes onto Jenna, giving Maya a chance to get her footing. “See? I have everything from Doug. The ring. Juniper. You’ll have nothing. You’ll be rotting in prison thinking about how you killed Doug.”
Jenna didn’t say anything.Maybe I pushed too hard.
Just as Maya was getting ready to take another tactic, Jenna broke the silence. “It was his idea. The bombs, that is.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“Doug. He set the bombs.”
Wayne pointed the gun straight out in front of him, but kept his elbows pulled in tight to his body so that no one could ambush him and grab his arms.
He could hear the voices off in the distance. Yelling. Some of the accents sounded Russian. Probably one of them was the man who had grabbed him and stupidly put Wayne back in the room without tying him back up to the chair. With any luck they would continue to make stupid mistakes like that.
One of the voices was the female Russian. That voice was cold, with no emotions, and sent chills down Wayne’s spine.
He continued to creep up to the side of the building to peek around the corner and see the situation brewing. As he went to stare around the side, a movement from his right side caught his eye. A person was coming down the hillside.
Wayne turned, keeping his back against the wall, looking for a spot to take cover. He was a sitting duck with the person on the hillside. He pulled his gun up and aimed.
The figure slinked down the mountainside and used rocks as cover. Wayne couldn’t get a good look. Hopefully, they hadn’t seen him yet. He moved back toward the door he had just come out of and waited. Watching.
The person crouched behind a rock, then stood up slightly, glancing over the top of the boulder. The thunderstorm had moved out, allowing a sunbeam to shine down and provide better light. The person ducked down again, but this time Wayne recognized Josh.
