‘You ok back there, Little Soul?’

I’m a conduit who has suffered at the hands of monsters my entire life. But it is with two demons I finally feel safe. Right now, for this most unholy of nights, I have two demons scorching the earth in my name. And fucking me senseless as they do. And soon, it will be three.

My giggle turns into a full-on fit of laughter as I fall on my side and lie on my back, full on laughing my very sore little ass off.

‘I think she has lost what little sanity she had left,’ Pain mutters, peering back at me through the rear-view mirror. ‘I hope she hasn’t broken completely. Our brother will be most disappointed if we offer him only half a conduit.’

‘Furious, more like. If she’s already done, he won’t muster the strength he needs to possess his vessel fully.’ Lust turns in his seat to face me completely. ‘Are you insane already, Little Soul? Have we broken you too soon?’

My laughs ease, but my smile remains as I gently shake my head.

‘No,’ I reply, letting out a long breath. ‘Just a little realisation that made me chuckle.’

He cocks his head. ‘And what realisation is that? I would love to know.’

‘Does it matter?’ Pain grumbles, slamming the car into another gear and taking a corner so fast the tyres screech.

Another giggle comes out as I slide down the seat.

Lust laughs gently, watching me go from one end to the other.

‘She’s not afraid at all,’ he tells Pain. ‘I can’t smell an ounce of it on her.’

‘Well. I doubt that will be the case for much longer.’

Lust laughs again when I slide back up the length of the seat when the car takes another sharp corner.

I stop by the window, my head hitting the door. Looking up at the night sky, I take a moment to admire the stars surrounding a full moon. I think of the sheer expanse of it all. The endless sky.The infinite galaxies. Is that where Hell is? Out there, lost in the stars? Or is it deep in the earth, sealed away beneath the dirt?

‘What is it like?’ I ask.

‘What’s what like, Little Soul?’

I look at Lust.

‘Hell,’ I reply. ‘What is Hell like?’

‘It depends,’ he says with a lazy shrug. ‘It’s different for everybody, I suppose.’

‘Depends on what? How good you were in your mortal life?’ I sit up, my head dizzy and mouth dry. ‘The kinder you were in life, the better it will be? Is that how it works?’

‘That. And a million other things.’

‘What will it be like for me?’

His grin deepens, and a darkness in his eyes shimmers with a twisted excitement.

‘You shall see, Little Soul. One day.’

His words only serve to make my throat tighten.

‘See?’ Lust sighs before looking at his demonic brother. ‘There’s still plenty of fear in there. She’s more than ready to meet our brother.’ He looks back. ‘Aren’t you?’

I nod, gripping the hem of my dress as I try to get my rising fear under control.

He drives on, lighting another cigarette, and both remain silent.

It’s twenty minutes later until we get to our next destination.
