“Very good, sir.” The smirk was clear in his voice. “We’ll get the others down the road.”

He snapped off a salute and disappeared into the shadows along the way.

The explosion from the tanker rolled a shock wave through the whole camp, throwing people and debris everywhere. And worse, in seconds, the hay that had been blown out started to rain down and it was all on fire.

“Shiiiiit,” I mumbled.

“Get up!” Smoke yelled, barreling out of the darkness. “Get up and run!” He hauled off into the compound in a different direction.

They all halted, and Aubrey—the kids’ mother—pointed away from the impressive fire back the way we had come in. “There! The main road is that way!”

“But the SUVs—” Chase called.

“Just go!” she yelled again.

None of them saw Gerry come out between the houses and nail Marcus in the knee with a 2x4 and send him sprawling. Devon spilled out of Marcus’ arms. Gerry swooped in and scooped up Devon, putting a gun to his head.

“Not good, not good,” I mumbled, training my gun on the back of the target. I couldn’t take the shot at that moment because the gun I had was too powerful. It would go straight through Gerry into Devon.

Smoke slammed into the wall next to me, out of breath. “Shot, Major?”

“No can do, Captain.”

He glanced down at my gun. “Jesus, Siggurdson. Do you need the portable rocket launcher?” He held up his Glock. “Trade me. For now. If you get a shot on the asshole, take it.”

We swapped weapons and glanced back up in time to see Uriah struggling to keep a grip on Carly. When she saw her father had a gun at her brother’s head, she broke free. She slammed into Gerry full tilt, pulling Devon to the ground with them.

“You fucking bastard,” she screamed, swinging her fists at him. “You let them touch me. You let them grope me! You were supposed to protect me from those men andyou are one!”

Oh, what the fresh hell was this? He was a pervert, too?

The other embedded agent, Jordan, swept by and scooped Devon off the ground, shoving him into Aubrey’s arms. He spun and had a gun on Gerry—and accidentally Carly.

“Jesus, he’s got a knife on her,” Smoke said.

“I’ll get her—” Noah started.

“No,” Smoke snapped off the word, stepping out of the shadows next to me. “Stay right there.”

Uriah saw the knife too and backed off.

“Don’t you touch her!” Aubrey screamed at Gerry. “You miserable piece of shit!”

“Fat cow,” he barked back.

Two of his lieutenants stepped out of the shadows and trained their guns on Austin. “He owes me money! I want the trust funds!”

“Why?” Aubrey yelled. “Gunrunning not paying well anymore?”

“I’d guess,” Smoke said, his stance relaxed but gun straight out at Gerry, “that he’s had some trouble contacting his people in Germany for those guns. That’s why he wants the money. He’s got an arsenal stored up and nowhere to move it. So he has to get in good graces elsewhere.”

Jordan laughed. “If you haven’t heard, boss, Wittesburg is dead. His lieutenants were smeared on the Autobahn. There’s no one interested in taking over his position, not with theBundesnachrichtendienstbreathing down their neck.”

“Bless you,” Marcus mumbled.

Ooh, someone had taken out Wittesburg? That was news. Good news. I liked it. That guy had been the subject of a mission or two while I was in the Rangers. I lined up Gerry in my sights and kept the Glock trained on him.

Gerry was staring at the other undercover agent and realization slid over his face. “You worthless bag of shit! Who are you? Who do you work for?” The gun moved to train on the undercover agent.
