“Okay,whohas kept you from calling?”
Dad had always been perceptive, and I laughed. “His name is Jace.”
“Ah, so a boyfriend, finally?”
God, I loved my father. “Yes. A boyfriend.”
“I want to meet him. Come out this summer. Bring him, and we’ll show him Iceland.”
“Let me make sure that he can get the time off. He just started a new job, and may not have much in the way of vacation.”
“Ugh. American labor. You know that’s half the reason I moved back here.”
“I know, Dad, but this is where I belong. This is where I can make money as a movie star and hopefully one day make the move into directing.”
There was a pause. “I miss you, Nils.”
“Dad…”
“Just promise me you’ll come home this summer and bring your man with you?”
“I will definitely be there,Pabbi. And if I can get Jace to come with me, he will be there too.” I paused. “And, Dad? I’ll try to call more, but please don’t think that you have to wait for me. If I can’t talk, I will let you know. Sometimes my life gets crazy and things slip away from me.”
He chuckled. “Fair enough. I should have called you, too. A fault on both our parts.”
“Yes,” I agreed.
“Now. Tell me about this boyfriend of yours. What was his name? Jace?”
I happily spent the next two hours chatting with my father. It confirmed that I did need to go home and visit my family, and bring Jace into the fold. Hopefully, one day, he’d be an official part of it.
