“Are you ready?” I asked.
He turned and stared at me. “Are you? This is your official coming out.”
“I’ve been ready.” As I said it, I realized it was true. I was just waiting for the right person to stand with me when I did. “Thank you, Jace.”
He seemed surprised. “For what?”
“For standing with me.”
The kiss was featherlight on my cheek. “My pleasure.”
“Here we go, sirs,” Mike called back.
The limo rolled forward just a little and when it stopped, one of the security guards pulled the door open. I stepped out, and the damn cameras were flashing already, and people were screaming my name.
I turned back and held out my hand for my date for the evening. Jace’s hand was shaky and slightly sweaty, but he grabbed on tight and I helped him climb out, wrapping his hand around my arm. I turned and revealed my man to the world.
There were even more flashes and shouting. The security guard closed the door and motioned us forward. Jace walked forward with me, and the cameras weren’t slowing down.
“Nelson!” “Nelson!” “Nelson!” “Over here!” “Who is this man?” “What are you doing with him?” “Where is your date for the evening?”
Finally, a voice I recognized called me, “Mister Powers!”
I found Garrett standing there with his camera woman, his mic held out to us. Garrett and I had a great rapport, and I had been hoping he’d be there.
“Evening, Garrett,” I said, walking over.
“Who is this on your arm?”
Jace was blushing deeply, and I couldn’t keep the fond smile off my face. “This is Jace McIntire, my boyfriend.”
The grin on Garrett’s face was blinding. “When did this happen, Mister Powers? And where did you find this handsome man?”
“Jace and I have been seeing each other for about four months now. He fell into me, quite literally, at a listening party for Up Down Left Right.”
“Literally?”
Jace was bright red. “I fell off a barstool because he startled me, and somehow we wound up tangled together with the stool on the floor. I’m not mister graceful.”
“And what do you do for a living, Mr. McIntire?”
“Key grip.”
His answer was far too brief, so I added to it. “Jace is also the cowriter for the new Xavier Renegade movie.”
“Oh really?” Garrett was again grinning from ear to ear. “And what can you tell us about the new script?”
Jace leaned right into the mic. “Absolutely nothing.”
I laughed and took his arm. “Garrett, call me. You know I’m always happy to sit for an interview for you.”
“Thank you, Nelson!” He moved on to someone else climbing out of a limo.
“Nelson!”
I recognized that voice and turned to find Zach there in a handsome shark-gray suit with a pink shirt and gray tie. He stuck out his hand and we went in for the bro hug.
Keeping his voice low, he leaned into me. “I read the new script. Shit, man. Good job. Who was the cowriter?”
