“Love you too,Sonnur. See you soon.”
Ending the call, I leaned against the wall and just let myself watch Jace. He was both nervous and excited to be standing there. It took another two minutes for his eyes to scan the party around him, looking for me.
Jace’s face absolutely lit up when he spotted me against the wall. He was so damn sexy, so nice, sweet, kind, and filthy. I knew what he was wearing under that custom tux…and I coughed, trying to remove the sudden lust that rose up in me before something else rose up in my pants.
I was smitten with him.
He turned back to his conversation and I just stood and watched him for a while. I had never realized that love would make me want to just stare at someone, watch them exist, interact, breathe, sleep, swim, eat...there was nothing Jace did that I didn’t enjoy watching. Maybe that was a little creepy, but I’d caught him staring at me more than once as well.
Right now, he was in a serious conversation, and his eyes were sparkling in excitement. Something good was going to come of this and maybe, just maybe, he could break out of the hellish cycle he’d been in. Paying off those debts was the first step. Now, maybe he could get on with his passion for cinematographic lighting. And if he was talking to ILM...
With a subtle nod of his head, he beckoned me over. I happily went and slipped my arm around his waist as I moved in next to him.
“Gentlemen,” he said. “I’d like you to meet Nelson Powers—”
The four men standing there exchanged glances laced with surprise. Finally, one stuck his hand out. “Mister Powers, Bradley Hardings.”
“Ah, you were part of the special effects team onInterspecies Love Story. Congratulations on your win!”
“And yours, Mister Powers,” another said. “First to grab both categories. Quite the honor.”
“It is,” I said, with a humble nod.
“He worked his ass off for it.” Jace was beaming. “Nelson, these are Jim, Adeem, and Jiao as well. All part of the team. We were talking about some future projects that they are looking for lighting support for. Including the new Xavier Renegade.”
The smirk crawled onto my face. Only four people had seen that script so far, but it said something that the production company was on the hunt for the techs already. “Ah, yes. I’m looking forward to slipping back into that leather jacket again.”
“Have you read the script yet?” Adeem asked. “We’ve heard it was a mess.”
Damn, how much could I say? Jace covered for us, though. “I heard that as well, but I also have it on good authority that it’s been sent to a doctor and it’s much better now. The production team wouldn’t be on the hunt for techs if they weren’t confident.”
“That’s true,” Jiao said. “Very true. Do you think you’d be in on that project, Jace? We can talk to our bosses. The lighting supervisor fromYesterday, Childis retiring. We need someone to take the new supervisor’s position. You’d be tossed in on the deep end.”
“Tell me who I need to talk to.” Jace’s smile was blinding. “I think it would be a good fit because Xavier should start filming right about when I’m done with my current obligations for Netflix.”
“Oh, you’re on a Netflix original?” Adeem asked. “You didn’t mention that.”
“I am. It was greenlit for two seasons and they’re doing them back to back, so it’ll run a little longer than normal.”
Even I hadn’t known the show was greenlit for two seasons. “Well, Xavier Renegade won’t start until next year,” I said. “I have a shoot in Quito, Ecuador that’s due to last about three months for a project.”
My phone chimed in my pocket and I pulled it out. I had set the alarm to let me know when we had to move to the next party. It was the last one and it was the one I didn’t want to go to the most. “Car’s going to be here in five minutes, Jace. One more stop?”
He nodded, but I could see he lacked the enthusiasm.
I turned back to the four men we were standing with. “Gentlemen. If you need to contact me or Mister McIntire, please reach out.” The business card I offered had my answering service and Cary’s email on it. “Both of those will get you to us.”
Jim held out his own card. “Sir, likewise. Jace, please do contact us. You’re fresh and I think that’s what we need right now. It’s been a pleasure.”
Handshakes went around and Jace and I headed for the front door. The limo would be waiting with Mike at the wheel. Jace was leaning heavy on my arm.
“You okay?”
“Just tired,” he admitted. “I don’t think I’ve had to keep going this long since I was in college, pulling an all-nighter for a term paper with a final in the morning.”
“Do you want to go to the last party?”
As soon as he started chewing his lip, I knew he wasn’t sure how to tell me he had no interest in the next stop. I grinned. It was a much younger crowd of actors, and instead of champagne and strawberries, with delicious tapas and canapes, it was going to be an all-out drug fueled keg stand nightmare.
