Jace
Igrabbed my phone off the coffee table and pulled up the right contact, fast.
“Hello?”
“Maddox, I need your help. I don’t know how to handle getting a private flight scheduled.”
“Why do you sound panicked?”
“I need to get Nelson to Iceland like yesterday. His dad’s had a heart attack and he needs to go.”
“Emergency flight plan, which the pilot will handle. You need to call the company that handles his planning and his staffing. Do you know who?”
“I don’t...”
“Do you know where the plane is?”
“LaGuardia.”
“Okay, I’ll handle that part then,” he said. “Order up a car and make sure he’s ready to go. You’re going with him?”
“I think I have to,” I answered. “He froze up.”
“Go with him. I’ll tell them to expect the two of you.”
“Thank you.”
“Jace, I’m going to have a car waiting for you and make a hotel reservation. I’ll send you all the information as soon as I have it.”
“Thank you, Maddox.” Even I could hear the relief in my voice. “You were the only one I could think of who would know how to do this.”
“You’re more than welcome, Jace. Let me know when you make it there. Just send a text.”
“You got it,” I said, and we said goodbye and hung up.
After calling the car, I walked to the wall safe Nelson had shown me and punched in the code. I reached inside and found his passports and mine. I stared at his, and finally decided that he would be better off with the one from Iceland and stuffed his US one back inside.
Nelson was staring at a half-packed suitcase and seemed completely disoriented. My parents had been gone so long I forgot the shock of hearing one of them was sick.
My hand was soft on his shoulder. “Get dressed. We have a flight to catch.”
“Do we?”
I nodded. “We do. Maddox is setting it up for us. You just need to get some clothes on. We’ll be on our way in a few minutes. Come on, I’ll finish packing. You need to go see your dad.”
“Yes...” he mumbled. “Yes. Dad.”
“Dress. Pants and shirt. Come on.”
He nodded and finally started moving. I loaded the bag with a week of clothes for both of us and put suits in as well. Just in case. I really hoped we didn’t need them.
The car was there just a few minutes later and I managed to get Nelson corralled out the front door. We were carted off to LaGuardia and to my surprise there was an agent waiting for us to arrive. As soon as we did, she appeared and pointed the way to where the jet was being prepped.
The crew, which was only the pilot and the copilot, ushered us onboard and started the final checks for the plane to take off. Nelson managed to come out of his stupor long enough to get his seat belt fastened.
“Nelson?” I kept my voice low, just loud enough to be heard over the drone of the airplane. He didn’t move. “Nils?”
At that he looked up. His expression was shocked and confused and a bit lost, and he considered me sitting there next to him. “Jace...”
