“Hello?”
“Vera, hi. It’s Nelson.” I saw Cary’s jaw drop and Jace swung around to stare at me in shock. “I know you’re busy, but could you do me a huge favor. I have two actresses who just won’t give up on you for the Oscars.”
“Nels, darling, I’m swamped—”
“No, I know that. I just wanted you to give them a call and send them to someone else. It’ll be a solid recommendation from you, and they’ll leave my poor agent alone.”
“Did you or your agent have anyone in mind?”
I relayed the question to Cary and she gave me two new designers’ names. I passed them on to Vera.
“Ooh, yes. Of course! I know both of their work and they’d love the chance. Just text me their names and numbers and I’ll have my assistant set up the call.”
“You are a doll, Vera.”
“Who are you using, Nels?”
“Oscar de la Renta.”
“Mm, can I send you to someone new?”
“I’m always up for it.”
“Excellent. I’ll have them call the store and set up your appointment for tonight.”
“Make it for two?”
“They don’t do women’s, Nelson.”
“I don’t need women’s.”
“You sly dog. Really?” I could see her laughing at the other end.
“Yes, really.”
“Love it. They will be all atwitter! All right, gotta run. Get me their names and numbers and I’ll set everything up.”
“Thanks, Vera.”
“And, Nelson, don’t be a stranger.”
“When I get back, we’ll have lunch.”
“Dinner, and with your man.”
“Done.”
We said our goodbyes and I ended the call. Both Cary and Jace were staring at me, and I grinned like the devil.
“You just…” Jace started.
“I did.” I laughed. “We met at Fashion Week about three years ago and just clicked as friends.” I held out my phone to Cary. “Just text her the two names and contact information for the ladies who are causing trouble, and she’ll set everything up.”
Cary just stared at me. “And she set you up too?”
“She did.”
“Are yousureyou don’t want to live out here? I could really use a local client who doesn’t make me want to gouge my eyeballs out.”
