"I hate to bother you on a Saturday, but we've got a situation with the Simpson case."
I set down my coffee and gave her my full attention. The last thing I needed was more complications with that fucking case.
"What kind of situation?" I asked, though I was pretty sure I didn't want to hear the answer.
"His attorney called the hospital this morning. Mr. Simpson was rushed to the hospital last night. His attorney said his office will be filing the formal lawsuit on Monday. They wanted to give us a heads up as aprofessional courtesy." She made air quotes around the last part, clearly as annoyed as I was becoming.
"Shit," I muttered, running my hand over my face. So much for Skylar's strategy of calling their bluff. Looked like they weren't bluffing after all. And there was the fact that he was hospitalized. That was definitely a curveball I didn’t see coming.
"There's more," Martinez continued, and I could tell by her expression that I really wasn't going to like what came next. "They're also planning on subpoenaing all of your surgical records for the past five years. They're looking for a pattern, or history.”
I relaxed at that news. They could have all the records back to residency if they wanted. I wasn’t one that made mistakes. Have I had negative outcomes? Of course, all doctors did. Yet, mine were never a direct result of a mistake by me. When you’re replacing body parts on senior citizens who want to take the risk, sometimes you lose some, or it takes longer for them to recover. Mr. Simpson didn’t fit in any of those categories, so that news didn’t concern me in the least.
I was pissed the fucking lawyer on the other side decided to call my department with this information instead of calling legal. I could see that strategy from a mile away. I didn’t need Skylar to make that move make sense. He wanted rumors to spread.
“Thanks, Dr. Martinez. I will get in contact with Skylar Wise, the lead attorney on this matter. Thanks for coming to me.”
“No problem, Dr. Aries. I think they wanted to get a reaction from me and spread this around the hospital. The entire call didn’t sit right with me.”
My exact sentiments,I thought.
“Thanks for keeping things covered. If no one else is keen to this information, keep it quiet until I can consult with legal.”
“Of course,” Dr. Martinez replied and walked out of my office.
I had my phone in my hand before the door clicked.
Chapter 10
Skylar
“Hello,” I answered, breathing heavily into my earbud as I entered mile five of my Peloton workout. When there was no response, I said again, “Hello?!”
“Skylar?”
I knew that voice instantly. Thankfully I was already out of breath from my workout. Otherwise, the excitement of hearing Aries’s voice first thing in the morning would have definitely left me needing to get oxygen to my lungs.
Once I forced my hormones to take a backseat, my brain took over. “Aries, is everything okay?” I slowed my peddling and took a seat on my bike.
As much as he complained about me interrupting him without notice, I had enough sense to know that he wouldn’t pull one of my moves on me.
Or would he?I thought. Aries did like to play games, and he was currently behind in this cat and mouse game we have been playing.
“Am I interrupting something?” he asked, his voice taking on a hint of annoyance.
What the hell crawled up his ass?
“Excuse me?”
“If you were busy with someone, you could have just declined the call.”
He’s jealous!Jealous and jumping to conclusions—conclusions that were so fucking far off base.
“Aries, I promise, if I was busy with someone, the last thing I would be thinking about is answering your damn call. If you must know I was enjoying my morning workout.” It was my turn to express annoyance because he had some damn nerve. “Now that I’ve cleared that up, is there a reason you are calling me on a Saturday morning? Especially when you were the one who wanted me to leave you alone.”
I heard a loud exhale on the other end of the line, and my mood swiftly changed from annoyance to worried.
“Aries, what is it?”
