I had to put my phone down. That simple question had my stomach in flips. I didn’t need to be focused on going home withAries. I needed to be focused on the mountain of work in front of me.
Dr. Arrogant:Is that a no?
Me:No.
Dr. Arrogant:No, I can’t come home with you, or no that wasn’t a no.
Me:Didn’t you have post op notes to get to?
Dr. Arrogant:I do.
Me:Then go do that.
I set my phone down with the intention of ignoring Aries until he arrived at my office. Of course, I was going to let him come home with me and fuck me into oblivion, but I liked keeping him on edge.
“Skylar?” Leslie called, peeking her head into my office.
“What’s up?” I asked. She looked like whatever she was about to say was going to annoy me.
“Hospital administration is on the line.”
“I don’t have time for them right now,” I muttered.
“I tried to set them up for a conference call tomorrow, but they requested to personally speak with you.
“Fine. Patch them through.”
Leslie walked back to her desk and my desk phone immediately started ringing.
“This is Skylar Wise.”
“Ms. Wise. This is Cynthia Mahoney. I just wanted to call you and complement you on a great press conference today. You did very well. I don’t want to take up too much of your time, but I would like to get on your calendar for later this week to get an update on the game plan. Dr. Yerba is a great doctor, and with anyone else I would be worried about these allegations, but he’s kept a pristine reputation, and I believe in him.”
“That’s really great to hear, Cynthia. I’m glad that the hospital is committed to standing behind Dr. Yerba. I am committed to him as well.”
Just then, I looked up from my computer and Aries was leaned against my door, staring me down, and listening to my conversation.
Ugh!He had to catch me saying good things.
“Cynthia, I have to go. Something just came up. I’ll have Leslie schedule a meeting later this week.”
After I hung up the phone, I pretended like there were other important things on my desk that needed my attention.
“I know you saw me standing here,” Aries spoke.
“I did. I didn’t know you needed acknowledgment.” There was something about getting under his skin that got me going. He got under my skin for so long—it was time to turn them tables!
"You're right," he said, pushing off the doorframe and walking into my office, closing the door behind him. "I don't need acknowledgment for existing. But I do need acknowledgment for following your orders like a good little doctor."
The way he emphasized 'good little doctor' with that smirk on his face had me rolling my eyes. I set down my pen and leaned back in my chair, trying to maintain some semblance of professionalism even though my body was betraying me.
"You did follow orders well," I mocked commended, watching as he approached my desk. "How does it feel to take direction instead of giving it?"
"Depends on who's giving the directions," he replied, his voice dropping to that low register that made my pulse quicken. He stopped in front of my desk; his hands braced on the edge as he leaned toward me. "Some people I’d ignore. Others..." He paused, staring me down, but not finishing his statement.
The pause caused the air between us to be filled with tension. It was sexual tension that was driving me crazy. Finally, I swallowed hard, trying to maintain my composure. "Others what?"
"Others make it... interesting."
