“I cannot even fathom how you live like that,” said Azure. “I can stop biting.”

“Don’t even think about it.”

“The way you live or the biting?”

“Biting,” he said, his eyes crinkling in laughter.

“Maybe we can just go back to the original plan,” said Azure. “We delivered the Lady. Now let’s make a run for Wyoming.”

“I like that plan,” he said, brushing her hair out of her face. “I like that plan a lot. But I think you’re going to have different plans in the morning.”

She ducked her face into his chest, hiding. Why did she feel so safe with him? What if she never made it to Wyoming? How could she ask him to go with her when she didn’t even know where she was going?

He wedged his hand in between them and pulled her chin up so she was looking at him. “There’s plenty of time to make plans,” he said. “Stop thinking.”

“I don’t know how to do that,” she said.

The moon and shadows should have washed the color from everything, but she could still see the intense green of his eyes. She knew it was his wolf staring out at her through his human face.

He kissed her. His lips were soft but firm and Azure felt herself let go. The air seemed to buzz with the thousand futures that were always just out of reach, and then there was nothing but silence and the steady thud of his heart against hers. She let her hands roam his body, marveling at the seeming permanence of flesh that she knew was changeable. Each soft ridge of muscle along his back was a sensual curve that she loved. He shifted, pushing her onto her back, pinning her there with his weight as he kissed along her neck. He slithered downward, caressing every part of her with his tongue. She wriggled and moaned, then bit her lip, trying to stay quiet. She didn’t need a repeat of the motel.

When he had her quivering on the point of orgasm, he pulled back. Sitting up, he stared down at her, his eyes glowing with a passion that gave her a thrill. She loved that she was his entire focus. He sank into her, and she moaned at the sheer relief and pleasure of having him inside her. He leaned down, kissing her, and she kissed him back, trying to match both his intensity and sweetness. She wanted him to feel what she was feeling. The world seemed to shift as he thrust into her. There were only the two of them. They were locked away from everyone else, and each moment with Rafe was the only one that mattered.

She arched underneath him and sighed out her pleasure as he drove her higher.

“Goddess, Rafe, please fuck me forever,” she groaned.

In response, he kissed her fiercely, and she held onto him, burying her face into his neck as he worked her harder. She was panting as he reached down and wrapped one hand around her ass, right where she liked it. He squeezed hard and lifted her up, driving in deeply.

Each thrust was the promise and torture of what was coming for her. Her toes curled in tight, and she dug her fingernails into his shoulders. She wanted to come so badly and at the same time wanted him never to stop. Just when she thought she could possibly die fromnothaving an orgasm, he leaned down and kissed her again. When he pulled back, he nipped her bottom lip. The sharp sting made her buck, just as he thrust into her, and she came with a suddenness that left her gasping and clinging to him as he finished.

She wanted to say she loved him. The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she froze. What would he say in response? But the second sight was entirely quiet on the subject, and Azure chickened out.

Episode 23

The Sunroom

Azure

“Oh, Goddess,” blurted out Scarlet coming into the sunroom. “They are freaking adorable.”

Azure, who’d been having similar thoughts, looked away from the window. Outside, Liam and Rafe were wrestling on the grass in wolf form. Or playing. She couldn’t quite decide. They both looked pretty happy with themselves, although she found the number of teeth on display a little unsettling.

The other pack representatives had been meeting with Albert individually all morning. She knew that meant decisions were being made, but she was trying not to think about it per Rafe’s advice from the previous night. She thought the only reason she was getting anywhere with that strategy was that she had Rafe to focus on.

“Is it bad that I’m finding him sexy even in this shape?” asked Azure, her head tilting as Rafe dove in and head-butted Liam, sending him sprawling across the grass.

“I’ve given up asking that question,” said Scarlet, settling down next to her on the wicker couch. “How are you feeling?” She put up a hand to Azure’s forehead, and Azure batted it away, feeling like showing teeth of her own.

“I’m fine,” she said.

“Uh-huh,” said Scarlet. “Sure, just take on some Warlocks, get blasted by your own power bounce, then hop back up the next day, and go circus master on a whole crowd of Supernaturals. No big. I’m sure you’re not tired at all.”

“Shut up,” said Azure sourly. She wanted to respond with something better, but she was too tired for clever.

“Shutting up,” said Scarlet, with an annoyingly gracious smile.

They watched their wolves for another moment, and Azure stole another look at her sister. Rafe was right. She needed to say something. Gathering up her courage, Azure cleared her throat and started with the simplest thing.
