“I don’t know what’s supposed to happen. I can’t explain any of it because I don’t remember it properly. I know... No, honestly, I don’t know. I’ve got patchy little bits of everyone and no clear picture on any of it. I want to say that you don’t have anything to worry about, but I know you’re not going to accept that without a better explanation.”

Killian’s shoulders sagged, and Moira realized that he was disappointed. He had wanted her to have a better explanation. He wasn’t digging in to simply have a contrary opinion. He had wanted to be convinced, and she was failing him.

“What if we’ve already had this argument?” asked Moira. He looked up, confusion on his face. “We are mates, and we love each other. We must have covered this at some point, don’t youthink?”

His head cocked. That was convincing to him.

“We don’t have the answer right this second,” she said. “But can’t we at least put a pin in it until we remember everything? Ceallach says there is a librarian in charge of door magic who can clear up our memories once we get all of this sorted out.”

“I like that idea. I just don’t know how it can be sorted out.”

“The thing is that I remember my uncle. So something must have happened to fix it. I just don’t remember what.”

“If it were fixed, wouldn’t he be the heir?” asked Kilian, and Moira’s heart sank. Was that what she was? A band-aid for a situation that wouldn’t ever be really healed?

“I don’t know,” said Moira, hopelessly, blinking back tears.

Abruptly, Killian wrapped his arms around her.

“You don’t know, and it’s not fair for me to ask you to know when I can’t remember anything either,” he said, holding her tight. With a groan, she relaxed into his hug. Everything was better when she could feel his heartbeat against hers.

“I love you,” he whispered. “You’re right. We shouldn’t be arguing when we don’t even remember if we’ve argued about it before.”

Moira chuckled. “I love you too,” she said looking up at him. “And I’m sure I won our previous argument.”

“Oh, you are?” A grin cracked across his face.

“Of course,” said Moira. “I win every argument. Even the ones I lose.”

“You make no sense,” he said.

“That’s how I win,” she said confidently. “Obfuscation and kisses.”

“Kisses?”

“Kisses,” she said and pressed her lips to his to prove her point. His kiss warmed her and pushed her worries aside. She wanted it to continue forever, but there was a polite cough fromthe other side of the glen.

“Right,” said Killian, stepping back. “We were dealing with warlocks.” Moira couldn’t help giggling as a blush crept up his cheeks.

“Yay!” exclaimed Cynog, clapping his hands. “I do not like it when your auras are so unhappy.”

“I’m not a fan either,” muttered Killian and Moira grinned at him.

“And now that the important things have been dealt with, perhaps we can talk about the humans trying to destroy our world?” suggested Ceallach, but his eyes twinkled.

Killian knew he was blushing. He appreciated the kindness of his new friends, but he was finding himself unprepared for having others be so invested in his life.

“Cynog and I got a good look at the warlocks,” said Killian. “Your count was right Moira, but I don’t think they have as much ammunition as we feared. It’s possible that they used a lot of it last night at the village. But they had a lot of machetes and they seemed happy enough to use them. If it comes to a fight, I think we will have one.”

“They had a bit more ammo in the temple, as well as axes, and explosives,” said Moira, nodding. “They also had some very odd artifacts from Egypt.”

“They were definitely from the library,” said Ceallach.
