“When’s your period due? Why would he give you this now? It’s got to be someone you know.” I pull out my phone and check the app I use to track my cycle.
“Shit, Saturday. But the Doc said with the IUD, I may not get them anymore.” Val taps her chin in thought.
“Well, that means whoever this is hasn’t seen you recently.” That’s not much help.
But it does beg to question where the fuck my security detail has been since now that I think back, it’s been well over twenty-four hours since I’ve laid eyes on them.
“Do you think this is just Marco playing tricks on you?” I sigh and shake my head.
“No. It’s not his style. That would imply he gives a shit. But I do trust him enough to follow his instructions. He might not care for me as his flesh and blood, but he would never endanger me because he knows Alfie would fucking flip.” Val nods and takes the bag from me.
“What are you doing?” I ask as he goes over to the garbage cans.
“Taking out the trash. That shit might be poisonous, and no way are we leaving it where a kid can find it.” I glance around at all the innocent bystanders and gulp.
It’s not just me in danger, but anyone around me. I follow Val as I think of a way to get back to the mansion tonight. But then Marco’s voice enters my mind.
Go home. Text me when you arrive. Don’t leave until I say so.
Chapter
Thirteen
The sorority houseis packed with people decorating, and getting to our room is almost impossible. It’s a security nightmare tonight. Even if I had my guards around, I doubt they’d be able to find me through all the streamers, cob webs, and fake spiders.
“It’s mischief night. The other sororities are going to go around pranking each other.” Val comments while we order a pizza.
“Seriously? I’m not sure my nerves can take anything else.” Disobeying Marco is sounding better by the minute.
“No, it’s good. Campus security is out in force, and it’ll be harder to sneak around without someone seeing you. It’s important that you don’t let this get to you. These assholes feed on fear. Do not give in to it.” Listen to her words and feel a slight twinge of guilt.
I should be much more scared than I am, but that dream and the way I felt that morning creep back like a nasty little secert that I just can’t get rid of.
“I’m angrier than scared, Val. I shouldn’t be dealing with this at all.” A loud knock startles us, and Val grabs her purse to tip the delivery driver.
“Hey, thanks for bringing it….HEY!” I look up in time to see Marco throw our pizza on the counter while Val falls face-first into the couch.
The door slams shut, and he stands in the middle of our living room, huffing like a pissed off bull.
“I tell you to come home, and you come here, then order a fucking pizza!” He screams at me.
“Nowhere in your order did you say starve! We were running errands when I called you. We never made it to the store because I came home. LIKE YOU SAID!” I scream right back at him.
He stomps back to the door and checks the locks. Then every window, and finally the back roof entrance.
“I found your guards dead in an alley three blocks from here. Alfonso is on his way back. You are to go back to the mansion. For future reference, when I say go home, I mean there. Pack your shit. I’m driving you now.” What?
“No.” I cross my arms and stand my ground.
“That was not a request.” I narrow my eyes at his angry face.
“I don’t give a fuck. I’m not leaving until after the party. I have responsibilities here. You can go. I won’t bother you again.” I regretted calling him the second he’d hung up on me.
A mistake I will not repeat in the future.
“Genesis, did you not hear me say your guards are dead? Do you want to be next?” He doesn’t lower his voice or soften his words, but I swear I hear concern in his tone.
No, that’s not possible.
