“I guess.” My brows crease as I hold his stare.
He crowds my body with a single step as he takes my hand in his, and if I wasn’t on my guard from his odd behavior I’d lean into him.
“This building amplifies sound, did you know that? Turns whispers into screams.” His fingers toy with mine and he sinks his teeth into his lower lip to prevent his obnoxious smile from growing.
Whispers into screams.
“If you have a question, you can just ask it, Dax.” My eyes narrow on him as I tip my head up to meet his taunting gaze.
“Did you finally fuck Ryder?” It’s a whispered question that nearly gets swept away with the sound of the patrons gathering on the first floor.
My heart stutters but still I stare unflinching up at him.
“No,” I nearly laugh when he cocks a dubious brow at me, “hefuckedme.”
Several. Times.
A magical color swirls within his smoky, heated gaze. His head tips down, his lips brushing mine.
“Good. Maybe his pent up emotions won’t be so distracting now,” he whispers before he kisses me slowly.
I lean into him as confusion tumbles through me.
I might never understand these three fae.
But it’s like they understand me perfectly.
“Darrio just woke up.” His eyes are still closed and for the first time, I can see the worry in his boyish features. Daxdyn hides his emotions so well, I wonder if he even recognizes them.
His brother nearly died. And he seems to have no idea how to handle that.
The cotton of his shirt is soft against palms as I pull his hard body against me. I wrap myself around him, holding him for just a few seconds.
“He’s okay, Dax.”
The calm I’m holding within me pulls through my body and into him. I feel it like a physical, tangible thing and I hope it eases his nerves.
His fingers tangle through my hair and he kisses the top of my head lightly before taking my hand and leading me into the next room.
Our boots echo against the iron flooring and my heart leaps as Darrio’s gaze locks with mine. I want to pounce onto the bed and cover his body with mine; shield him from anything else that might ever threaten his life.
But I don’t. With careful movements, I sit gently on the edge of the bed. Careful not to brush against the bandages over his ribs and arms. My wide eyes hold his as I wait for him to speak.
“I’m not breakable, my human. Get your ass over here.” He holds an arm out to me and it’s all the invitation I need.
The mattress dips as I crawl up it and bury my face into his chest. The strong scent of pine and blood floods my senses and I just meld into his strength. The dry, rough bandages meet my palm and I feel his solid muscle beneath.
He’s healed.
Perfectly healed.
His fingers tangle through my hair and for a few seconds I just lie there, hoping I’ll never have to leave him again.
Although … it was his fault I left him and Dax in the first place.
The hard panes of his newly healed chest collide with my fists and he gives a quiet grunt.
“Why did you push me into this realm? I could have helped you.” My blazing gaze waits for his reply as my eyes take in everything about him. His full lips that are parted with confusion. His long, dark hair that’s more unmanageable than mine for once. His ridiculous, overbearing body that’s so strong I know he’ll never break.
