Cameron and Link come to stand at my side as the others slide down from their beasts. The moment we’re off, the creatures drill holes fast into the ground. The sand and rock cover their disappearance, sifting rapidly over them as if they never existed at all.

Violence takes a few steps past the house and stares out at the land looking toward the city where it’s darker, shadowed by the magic of the Underworld. Her pretty gaze skims over every inch as if she knows what lies there. She knows. Even if she doesn’t realize she knows. You can feel it. It’s a pressing, eerie sensation that skims along your flesh, making the fine hairs stand on end.

It’s all around us, warning us to stay safely where we are.

But that’s not the plan.

For a moment, I just watch her. I watch the way the breeze pulls at her long hair, the skies turning her pale locks into a burning color. Her eyes are narrowed, her full lips pursed. She holds an image of total fearlessness.

That strength sinks right into me.

That feeling’s ripped away in an instant when the massive face and slitted, red eyes of a Death Striker slides through the ground. Its snake-like body coils higher until it’s looking down on the fearless woman who doesn’t notice the slinking black tail that’s starting to twist around her feet.
