And if this weapon was synced with her biometrics, she could activate and use it on me right now.If she did, this restaurant would be closed by the time I regained consciousness.
“Can I have it?”
I gazed into her large, dark eyes and recalled my phone call with Vaughn an hour ago. There was no record of this unit in the databases he’d checked, which meant that it was contraband.
Division devices—including the immobilizers—were calibrated specifically to the assigned agent and activated only by biometric identification.Technically, no one else could operate them.It was common knowledge, however, that there were hackers capable of pirating the device codes and resetting them for unauthorized use. There were laws established to prohibit the trade or sale of them, and the punishments were stiff. But that didn’t stop it from happening.
“Do you mind?”Her tone was noticeably cooler.
The moment of reckoning had arrived.Should I trust her?Was she unaware of the capabilities of this device, or was she playing a game with me?Regardless, the only way to find out was to at least pretend that I had no idea what the device was.
“Good thing I didn’t toss it,” I said, withdrawing my hand.“What is it?”
“I have no idea. When I found it, I thought it was a whistle, but the tube is blocked.”She held it up.“The thing doesn’t seem to do anything. It’s a mystery, but I’m going to figure it out.It might just be my lucky charm.”
“Maybe.Where did you find it?”
“I stepped on it in San Francisco, on the street right in front of the old chocolate factory.I figured a tourist must have dropped it.”
“Huh.”I tried to sound only mildly interested.“How long ago was that?”
She shrugged.“I don’t know.Maybe a month ago.”
I chuckled.“And do you keepeverythingyou find on the street?”
“Only when they’re as interesting and mysterious as this thing.”She smiled, a hint of mischief in her eyes.“And I don’t limit myself to things.Sometimes people fall into that category too.Like the ones I find at sidewalk book sales.Occasionally, that works out pretty well.”
“I guess that thingisa lucky charm.”
Beneath the table, she brushed a bare foot up against my ankle, and my mind immediately drifted back to the image of her naked body stretched out on my bed.Sex with her had been fucking amazing.Judging by the slight blush that tinged the tips of her ears and her cheeks, I decided that she was thinking the same thing.
As our server approached with the appetizers, Avalie pocketed the device and smiled at the young woman.A plate of oysters was placed before each of us, and she wasted no time diving in.
Watching her eat was both fascinating and arousing. She was so deliberate in the way that she first put a generous dollop of horseradish and a spritz of lemon on each oyster on the plate. As she did so, she examined each shell carefully, apparently admiring the pale, delicate colors of the satin-smooth insides and the glistening treasures they held. The anticipation was palpable as she brought three oysters in succession to her full lips, closing her eyes slightly and savoring the blend of flavors in each one.
As I watched her mouth, my arousal sharpened at the memory of the softness of it.
“Now I understand why they say oysters are aphrodisiacs,” I mused quietly as I downed my first oyster.
Her eyes lifted to my face, and there was a playful glint in them.“In that case, you should have ordered something else.”
“And why is that?”
“Well,” she said quietly.“I don’t think you need any help with your sexual performance.”
I stretched out my legs and adjusted my tightening khakis.“Same to you.”
She lifted her drink and took a sip, watching me intently over the rim.
I pushed my plate away.“Can we pack the rest of these oysters and order dinner to go?”
“Absolutely not.I told you already about my roommate. She’s expecting me back.”Her gaze shifted to the remaining oysters on my plate.“Aren’t you going to finish those?”
I swapped my plate with hers.“Ask and it shall be yours.”
“Only oysters?Or other things too?”
“I’m known to be a good guy. You’ll never know unless you ask.”
