I sigh, annoyed. “Let me get rid of whoever this is.”

I sit up and grab my phone. When I see it’s my little brother, I almost ignore him. But then my conscience pipes up.

I answer. “What’s up?”

“I need your help.”

“What now?”

He huffs out a breath. “I’m sorry I called you, Ryker. I didn’t want to.”

“But you did.”

“Dude, I’m really not in the mood to get lectured by you.”

“What is it this time? Are you naked and locked out of the house of the girl you’re hooking up with because you called her the wrong name?”

He exhales sharply, clearly annoyed.

“Did your fuck buddy’s boyfriend walk in on you, and now you’re running for your life?”

I catch Maddy staring at me with wide eyes.

“Ryker,” he says sharply. “It’s not like that.”

“Well, it was like that the last few times you called me, asking for help.”

“My car battery is dead. Can you help me or not?”

I run a hand through my hair. “Yeah. Where are you?”

“At the gas station on the corner of Pinehurst and Tenth Street, just off campus.”

“I’ll be there soon.”

I hang up and look at Maddy. “I have to go help my brother. I’m sorry.”

I tell her about his dead battery, but then I remember that I don’t have jumper cables in my car.

“Damn it,” I mutter.

“What’s wrong?” Maddy asks.

“I had my car detailed the other day and forgot to load back up the jumper cables. I’ll have to go grab some.”

“I have some in my car. I can drive you to your brother.”

I look at her. “You sure you want to?”

She smiles. “Yeah. I’m eager to meet your little brother. See how much he’s like you.”

I roll my eyes. “You won’t be impressed. He’s kind of a dumbass.”

She chuckles and gently shoves my shoulder. “Don’t say that about your little brother.”

“Just wait till you meet him.”
