“Bullshit.” I groan and squeeze my eyes shut before sitting up and looking at her. “He thinks that I’m not doing enough to keep control. As if establishing the largest cocaine imports in the country is nothing. Or the fact that the Lyndes haven’t been able to attack us in a meaningful way since Noah’s death.”
“And yet, he still thinks that isn’t enough?”
“He’s ready for this to end. Pretty much foaming at the mouth.” I bite the inside of my cheek, wondering if I could stand in front of my sister and kill her if I needed to.
She’s always been my weak spot, and that’s never going to change.
I could make sure that she, Bianca, and the baby on the way were somewhere safe before the war fully kicked off, though.
Morgana sips her wine before setting the glass to the side and grabbing the remote. “Okay, so, we’re going to put on a movie, and while we do that, you’re actually going to take time to relax, and we’re not going to think about men or any of the problems they’ve been bringing to our lives.”
“What about women?” I wiggle my eyebrows and stretch my foot out to nudge her thigh. “Did anything come from that waitress you’ve been seeing for the last month or so?”
She makes a noise in the back of her throat. “I’m starting to think that relationships are pointless, and I should give up while I’m ahead. I mean, I can’t exactly tell them what I really do for a living, and you’d be amazed at how many women don’t want to hear that I spend my day around men.”
I lean in. “And men are still off the table, or are we going to be switching to another dick phase?”
She lifts her wine high in the air. “The dick diet continues! It’s No Nut November after all. But come December, I’ve got a Mrs. Claus outfit I plan on bar hopping with. You should come with me. You could be my sexy reindeer. We could find you someone else to ride.”
“Not going to happen. I have too much on my plate. I think it’s time to swear off anything other than my vibrator.”
After being with Aiden, whoever comes next will pale in comparison. He ruined me for other men.
And why bother? It’s not like anything will come from spending time with or fucking a man.
I glance at the movie titles on the screen while she scrolls through them, trying to find the perfect one.
Morgana’s nose wrinkles. “You’re going to kill that poor thing, one of these days.”
“And you might kill me if you sleep with the entire shop again. Promise me that you’re not going to do that, so I don’t have to find another dozen mechanics to hire.”
She shrugs and downs the rest of her wine. “I’m not sure that’s a promise I can make you. There’re so many people in the world to sleep with and so little time.”
“Hard to explore all the options when there’s work that needs to come first.”
She scoffs. “Work has never been that fun. The boss is a hard ass.”
I grab the blanket from the back of the couch and drag it into my lap as the wind starts to howl outside. “He is, but you know he’s right about everything to come. I keep thinking that he’s starting to lose it, but then every time something works out the way he said it would, I’m left standing there and wondering how the hell most things went to plan.”
“Does he have someone on the inside that’s feeding him information?”
“Not with the Lyndes. I’m not sure about anybody else. I haven’t seen anyone coming or going from my meetings with him that I’ve seen around the Lynde family.”
“Want me to keep watch over them? I don’t have any other assignments for the foreseeable future.”
“Just keep leaving the bodies at their doors.” I pause, pressing my lips together and turning it through in my head. “Actually, keep an eye on the two youngest sisters.”
“Why? Apart from the middle one, they’re as removed as people could get from this.”
“I don’t think that’s true at all. I think they’re likely deep within it, but they keep getting overlooked. This is going to turn into a full-blown war soon, and I don’t want any surprises from them. I need to know what parts they’re involved in and how good they are at holding their own.”
Morgana nods. “I can follow them. You’re going to have to get someone to cover at the garage, though. If I’m going to be trailing university students all day, I can’t be running the shop.”
“I’ll get it dealt with.” I shift on the couch, reaching to undo the button on my jeans, trying to get comfortable.
I should’ve taken a hot shower before she came over and got into something a little more comfortable.
Morgana sighs and looks over at me. “You know, there are times when I think about what life would be like if I found someone to settle down with. I keep trying to picture what my life looks like ten years from now.”
