“I love you more than you’ll ever know.” He pressed his lips into her hair.

But unfortunately, sometimes love just wasn’t enough.

Logan pressed send, then shut his laptop. He let his head fall back. He still had two more chapters to write, but they’d have to wait. That one had hit a little too close to home. Because it turned out love wasn’t enough, and neither was he. He wasn’t enough for Devin, and he wasn’t enough for his editor.

Logan pulled up a new email to his editor.

I think it’s time to consider either a collaborator or a ghostwriter for number four. Send me writing samples of people you think would be a good fit, and I’ll look through them.

Time to say goodbye to Victor Holt.

Sometimes love just wasn’t enough.

Where did he come up with that? Devin resisted the urge to scream. He was giving up.

She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to push all the pain away. Maybe she would walk away too. If Logan didn’t want her, she couldn’t do anything about that. She’d spent her entire childhood trying to make her parents want to be with her to no avail. She didn’t want to marry someone who she had to convince to come back to her.

Devin pulled up the resignation letter she’d typed last night. She reread it for the millionth time, then hit send. She pulled up the Barlows’ number and sent off a quick text.

Heather

They moved them this morning.

The words were like a punch to the gut. She didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye.

Pearl’s barking echoed from downstairs. Could Logan have come back? She shut her laptop, jumped off her bed, and hurried down the stairs. Her steps paused halfway down at Hannah’s voice talking to Jess.

Not Logan. But she did need to talk to Hannah. Devin continued to the bottom of the stairs. Jess turned to her. “Perfect. I’m headed out. I’ll see you in a bit.”

As soon as the door shut, Devin gripped Hannah’s hand. “How’s Roman?”

“Feeling very proud of his six stitches.”

Six? “I am so sorry, I just?—”

“It was an accident. How are you doing?”

“I’m fine.” At least she didn’t have six stitches and what must be a major headache today.

“Really? Because it’s okay not to be fine.” Hannah gently squeezed Devin’s arm. “I know Logan left.”

“It’s because of me. We fought and…” Tears filled her eyes and clogged her throat.

Hannah wrapped her in a hug. After a moment, Hannah leaned back.
