“I’m going to ask you one question, and I want your gut instinct question. Don’t think about it, just blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.”

“Okay,” Starr said and went to stand at the end of the table, opposite her brother, so when she looked at him, all the patch holders could see her facial and body expressions.

“What is your opinion of Brenda Smith?” Luc asked.

“First class royal fucking bitch. Entitled, thinks she’s the next best thing since sliced bread. Lazy, riding this class on others’ coattails, refuses to get her hands dirty. Delusional about how life actually works.”

“Okay, now next question, are you friends with her?”

“No, I only met her when I started that makeup class in January, prior to that, I had never seen nor heard of her. She said she was in the same program as I was at college, you know, the one I just graduated from? However, she wasn’t in any of my classes, none. When I went to Professor Tiggs about my idea for your Halloween Bash, and told him I would need help, I stressed that I didn’t want Brenda to work on my team. But, if he deemed she had to, then she was low man on the totem pole and had to take directions from me, him, Kelsey and Matt, all before she had a say in anything that went on. Oh, and Brad Tiggs. In my eyes, as well as Professor Tiggs’, she’s the lowest on the team.”

“Would you and the others be hurting if she’s off your team?”

“No. To be perfectly honest here, Lucius, I’m looking for a substantial reason to go to the professor to get her removed. Me saying that I don’t like her won’t cut it. I need proof of something she’s been doing that isn’t ethical, or against the rules we both put together for the team to follow.”

Starr watched as everyone turned to look at Luc, to see what his next statement would be, and he only lifted a hand and pointed to Hawk.

“Tell Starr what you told us.” The next ten minutes Hawk repeated what he had said earlier and everyone saw how pissed off Starr was. When he was done, Starr looked at everyone in the eye.

“Do I have your permission to talk to your ladies to verify this? I’m not calling them liars, I just need proof, and a he said, she said situation, isn’t proof.”

The men agreed and when Starr started to leave, Luc stopped her.

“This next statement has nothing to do with this club. This is personal on my part. In a little over two weeks, I will be going on vacation. I’m taking Thursday to the following Sunday off.” He nodded when everyone stared at him in shock, because he never took a vacation outside the club. “This is not for the club. This is personal for me.” He looked directly at his sister and did his signature eyebrow lift. “I’m going to several haunted places in West Virginia with Lilith.”

“Yeah!” Starr pumped her fist in the air. “We’ve become friends and we agreed not to talk about our personal lives. She does tell me that she has a date with you if I happen to call to see if she wants to hang out. May I ask one question?”

“You may, I might not answer it, but you may ask.”

“Are you going to that prison she always talks about?”

“Yes.” Luc smirked, then explained to the others. He nodded at the end of his speech, then sighed heavily. “I will be leaving my cut at home, along with my bike. It’s not that I don’t have confidence in myself, I just don’t know the area.”

“You’ll be taking your truck?”

“Yes, and I would like you guys to swing by my place if you get a free minute.”

“What am I?” Starr asked in outrage. “Chopped liver? You do remember that I only live two hundred yards away from you, right?”

“I remember, but answer this, will you be able to pull a firearm and aim it at an intruder, willing to use deadly force if someone breaks into my house or barn?” He paused and then continued, “What if that person that tried to break in was Brenda Smith? Could you pull a gun on her?”

“Oh, well, when you put it that way, then no. And, since Mom and Dad will be leaving next week for three months, then yeah, have the guys come check things out.”

“Will you be safe by yourself?” Bandit asked.

“Yes. We don’t have a lot of activity out there outside of everyday life. The only people outside of the four of us who come are you guys, and then the strikers and prospects to escort Luc here for a run.”

“Okay,” Bandit said, and Starr missed the subtle looks that passed between the men and Luc. Starr left and went down to the bar. She looked around and saw that it was extremely slow, so she approached Misty, and after ordering only a soda, she asked the bartender what she had overheard or seen Brenda Smith do. By the time she left the bar several hours later, her phone was full of photos taken by the other women, and taped conversations of how Brenda said that she was dating Lucifer, that’s what she called him, like she had earned the right to call him by his club name, and that there would be changes being made in the near future, where the women would have to answer to her, because she was about to become engaged to the president of Hell’s Coffin motorcycle club. Little did this delusional individual know that she just put the last nail in her own coffin.

Chapter 14

At seven thirty on a Thursday morning, Luc pulled into Lilith’s driveway, excited to get on the road. He hurried to her door and grinned when it opened before he knocked. Instead of greeting her with words, he took her face in his hands, bent down, and kissed her. They broke apart several minutes later, both breathing hard.

“Are you ready?”

“Yes, I just have these two bags here, but there’s more in the kitchen.”

“Let me take these out, and I’ll be right back.” He picked up the bags, surprised that there wasn’t a lot of weight to them, took them to the truck to store in the backseat with his own suitcase, then hurried back inside. He met her in the kitchen and frowned at her.
