“Absolutely not,” he said with conviction. He walked to her, gathered her in his arms and held her tight. He even laid her head on his chest and kept his hand on the back of her head to hold her there. She wrapped her arms around him and they stood like that for a good ten minutes before he would let her go.When he did, he took her chin in his fingers and bent down to lightly kiss her on the lip.

“I’m not mad at you. What you did proves to me that you have my back, that you’re standing beside me, and not working against me to get what you want out of me. It’s Ann and Brenda we have to worry about.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Honestly? Right now, I want to go down there and confront the lying bitch, but I need to do something first.” He reached over and picked up his phone and sent a text. When he put his phone down, he looked at her with his quirked brow. “Can you stay?”

“Yes, I’m done with work until Monday.”

“Why Monday?”

“Because today is Saturday.”

“Ah, sorry, I forgot.” He paused as he picked up his phone to answer the incoming text. He nodded then looked at her. “I know this is a stupid question, but do you know Bandit?”

“The club’s Vice President?”

“Yes. In his real life, he’s a cop. I sent him a text to have him come here. He’s already on his way.”

“Why do you need him?”

“He can run a legal background check on Ann, or Sally, or whoever the hell she’s calling herself. Did you note that the fine print before her signature is giving me the right to do a background check on her whenever I feel it is appropriate.”

“Yes, it’s standard procedure, I don’t think people actually do it, but it saves your ass if you have to.”

“Exactly, and though it’s Saturday, I want Bandit on this right away. It shouldn’t take long. Did your friend do any sort of background check?”

Lilith smiled as she flipped the folder open again and pointed to the pages Richard had given her. While Lucius was reading them, Bandit walked into the office.

“What’s up, Boss?”

“We have a fox in the henhouse,” Luc said. At Bandit’s expression, both Luc and Lilith explained the situation, and when Bandit saw the evidence he whistled. Without saying a word, he pulled his phone and made one phone call. Lilith heard him tell the person on the other end of the line to run a background check on Sally and Ann. He even asked for a criminal check and any known associates she might hang out with.

“Two hours okay?”

“Perfect.” Luc turned to Lilith with a grin. “Hungry?”

“Starving.”

“Good, then we’ll go down and order lunch. Let’s see if Ann has a problem with waiting on you.” They went downstairs, but not before Luc locked the papers in his desk and pocketed the key.

Chapter 19

“Well, that sucked,” Lucius said as the three of them entered his office three hours later. They had gone down to the bar to get something to eat, and while Ann had waited on them initially, once they placed their order, she seemed to disappear, leaving Misty to do the lunch rush by herself. Not that twenty people in the bar was a lot, but it was a lot for one person. The only time, after eating, they saw Ann was when Luc went into the kitchen to talk to the cook and she was washing dishes. When Luc asked what she was doing, she ignored him.

Bandit looked up from his phone, and nodded toward Luc. “Look at your e-mail.” He stood and went to stand behind Luc as he did so. There was a report from the person Bandit had called to do the background check. Luc shook his head and looked over at Lilith.

“You’re right, Sally and Ann are one and the same.”

Before anyone could say anything, there was loud knocking on the closed office door, and Lucius called out for them to enter. It was Misty the regular bartender.

“What’s up?” Luc asked.

“I want the new girl reprimanded. She left me high and dry to hang out in the kitchen. You saw how busy it was, and lunch hour hasn’t even started. As soon as she came back out of the kitchen, I yelled at her, and she only shrugged, had some sort of grin on her face, and said, and I quote, ‘my bad’. Luc, I can’t work with her if she’s going to disappear like that.”

“I know,” Luc said, and because Misty was dating one of the patch holders, he told her what was going on, and showed her the evidence.

“Shit, do you think she planted herself here to get to you or Lilith?”
