She ran a tongue over her lips and took a tiny step away also, reminding herself that he was a parent at the school. “Well, thank you for saving me tonight.”

“Ditto,” he said, watching her. The intensity of his gaze made her dizzy. Or maybe it was the fact that when he looked at her, she forgot to breathe.

Definitely a dad she’d like to…The f-word never rolled off her tongue, or her mind, easily. Cursing was much more Val’s style—preacher’s daughter and all.

“Do you need a ride?” he asked.

Her mouth fell open. “Wh-what?” Had he heard her thoughts? Had she actually said what she was thinking out loud? Oh, geez. Her hormones were way out of control.

“A ride to school tomorrow? You lost your keys. How will you—?”

“Oh.” She laughed nervously. And wow, her cheeks were burning.

“What did you think I meant?” A wicked smile crawled over his lips because he knew good and well what she’d thought, and that was mortifying.

“My secretary can pick me up and take me to my car. I have a spare set of keys in the house. It won’t be a problem.” She stepped over the door’s threshold, needing to get inside before the embarrassment killed her. Or before she gave in to her desire and pulled him inside with her. “Good night,” she said, her voice breaking a little on the end.

With a wave, he retreated toward his Jeep, glancing back once to offer one of those knee-weakening smiles.

Kat closed the door and leaned against it, sucking in a deep, shuddery breath. What had just happened? She hadn’t kissed a man since she’d kissed John goodbye right before his deployment.

But this kiss with Micah had been fake. It didn’t count.

Only it had felt real. Too real.
