“London offered to drive me home,” Jules says quickly.

True arches a brow at me in question.

“I did,” I say. “You’re right, she’s too tired to drive.”

He studies me, and I’m so glad in this moment that my desire for him is dead in the water. Somehow, it makes me confident that he can no longer see through me.

“Fine,” he says after several beats. “I’ll drive behind you.”

He heads back to his SUV.

Jules goes around to the passenger side of her own vehicle, and I get in behind the wheel.

When I don’t drive off right away, True honks.Irritating asshat.

Jules sticks her middle finger out the window, and I laugh.

“So, how does it work?” I can’t help asking once we’re on the move. “Do you all just sleep with each other?”

“What do you mean?” she asks through another drunken yawn. “Who sleeps with each other?”

“You, True, Reuben…?”

“What are you talking about?” She sounds as confused as I am.

“You’re not hooking up with True?”

She’s quiet for a beat. And then she guffaws. “Let me guess, he said I’m his ‘girlfriend’?”

“Well, yeah….”

“Did he also say he has a ‘half wife’?”

“He said that, yeah.”

“You wanna take a guess who his ‘half wife’ is?”

“I don’t—”

“Lexi.”

“Trent’s wife?”

“Yes. And his other ‘girlfriend’ is Lyra. Torin’s wife.” She cackles some more. “He claims us all as his to irritate our husbands. He can’t help himself.”

“Seriously? What a nutjob.”

She giggles. “Tell me about it. The man’s a handful.”

“How did you know he was close by?”

She drops her head back to the headrest. “The Garzas consider Reuben and me as family, so we’re in their support group. It has a feature that allows us to see each other’s location at all times. When anyone of us needs help with anything, we contact the person who’s closest to us. And if our location disappears without prior warning for more than sixteen hours, an alert will go up until that person is located.”

“Oh, it’s good to have that kind of support system.”

“Yeah. Reuben’s family are all in New York, and I’m estranged from mine, so I do feel lucky to have the Garzas. Especially during times when Reuben’s away on long jobs.” Another long yawn. “So, how’s it going for you at Red Cage?”

“Good… so far.”
