“Do you know anything about Gizella?”
“Who?”
“Gizella.”
“Who’s that?”
“The woman who found me after the train.”
A pause.
“Is that who you’re seeing?”
“I found her, yes. She’s alive. I was so relieved. But, Sebastian, she is getting money sent to her. Every year. A lot.”
“From where?”
“I don’t know. I was going to ask you if you had anything to do with it?”
“Me?”
From the sarcastic tone in his laugh, Fannie immediately knew he didn’t.
“Never mind,” she said. “It was a stupid thought.”
“Sorry.”
“Goodbye then.”
“Wait.”
“What?”
“Fannie?”
“Yes?”
“Are you coming home soon?”
She touched her chest.
“I’m going to keep traveling for a while.”
A long silence.
“I thought you were calling to tell me you found my brother.”
“Why would you think that?”
“I don’t know. Never mind.”
“Goodbye, Sebastian.”
“Will you call again?”
“Yes. I’ll call.”
“When?”
