“And whoever sent him,” Ronny continued, “told him not to harm you.”

Brina considered that response. “Why would you say that?”

“He had a gun. He didn’t use it.”

“But why would he want to take me to another location anyway?”

“It suggests you may have something they want, or you may know something they need to know. Or they may have wanted to use you for ransom.”

“Ransom?Me?” She smiled. “He must be insane. There’s nobody on the face of this earth that’s going to pay a ransom for me, is he kidding?” She was smiling and shaking her head. “That can’t be it.”

But she noticed that Ronny wasn’t smiling at all, as if that most definitely could be it. “You actually think that’s a possibility?” she asked him, unable to shield her skepticism.

“I don’t know for certain, but it’s not as far-fetched an idea as you think.”

“But there’s literally no one that would pay a ransom for me, sir. I mean Ronny.”

Ronny stared at her. “No one,” he said, “except me.”

Brina’s heart squeezed when he said those words. It was sweetness to her ears. And although she still doubted that that could be the motive, the fact that Ronny would have stepped up for her had it been the motive meant the world to her. “Thanks,” she said, and leaned over and gave him a friendly kiss on the cheek.

But when she went to move back from him, he pulled her back to him, wrapped her in his arms, and kissed her on the lips. Only his kiss wasn’t chaste and wasn’t meant to be friendly. The fact that he hadn’t touched her didn’t negate the fact that he desperately wanted to, that he desperately needed to, and his passionate kiss represented that need.

They kissed with that sense of all-consuming fire. And then Ronny moved down, to her breasts, to her stomach, and then to her womanhood. It had been years since Brina felt a man’s touch that totally, and it felt beyond good to her.

And when he moved back up, and looked into her eyes, he knew she was ready. He hugged her again and spoke in her ear.“I have no children because I have never had unprotected sex in my life. But with you?”

There was a plea in his voice. And Brina believed his plea. And when she nodded her consent, his breath caught because he wanted it so badly, and he entered her with such a gentle, caring thrust that it made both of them gasp in anticipation.

The further in he went, the fuller it felt to Brina. And the fuller it felt to her, the tighter she felt to him. And they fell into a rhythm. Stroking and moving in unison. And not just for a few minutes, but for well past half an hour. They moaned and groaned and couldn’t stop the feelings. Sweat poured from both of them as they kept moving, kept moaning, kept stroking. They couldn’t stop the feelings because they didn’t want to stop them. Until they were overwhelmed with those feelings. And then they came.

Even that was a slow, sweet, hard, wonderful burn. It was orgasm after orgasm. Rolling orgasms for both of them. Until they were running on empty.

And even then, as he slid off of her, he moved her on top of him at the same time. He pulled her into his arms, still inside of her, until they both fell asleep once again.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Ronny reached for Brina before he opened his eyes. When he didn’t feel her next to him, he woke up to find himself alone in bed. He leaned up, to see if she was on the couch or in the bathroom or somewhere else in his room, but she wasn’t there. And the thought that she was out of his sight, and his reach, upset him.

He threw the covers off of his naked body, got out of bed, and threw on his bathrobe. Sliding into his slippers, he made his way out of the bedroom, across the landing, and down the backstairs that led to the servants’ quarters. He was convinced, knowing the kind of person Sabrina appeared to be, she would have felt it her obligation to go to work. Which pleased him that she was a devoted employee. But it angered him too. Didn’t she realize everything had changed?

But as he made his way downstairs, he realized he was assuming facts not in evidence. They slept together, made love together, but what else really changed? But as he made it to the ground floor, he stopped walking to think about that. Did everything truly change? Was he really ready to commit his life, his entire being, to this person? When he was determined to never let anybody play him like that? And just like that, in one night, he was ready to cast aside his entire lifestyle? He was ready to go against everything he said he’d never go against? What was he thinking???

But as he turned to go back upstairs and let her be, he stopped in his tracks again. Because the very thought of her not being a full part of his life scared him too. Maybe even more than that dreaded word called commitment. Maybe even more than that horrifying word called love. Maybe even morethan being played. And she was still in danger too? His security apparatus hadn’t found her attacker yet. She was still vulnerable. And he was going to just let her be?

He couldn’t.

There was no way.

He turned back around once again and made his way back down to the ground floor and through the double doors that led into the servants’ quarters. When he entered the room, Elvira and James, who were seated at the elongated table talking amongst themselves, immediately stood on their feet.

They both were floored to see him, and to see him standing there in his bathrobe. It was a first for both of them.

James began moving toward him. “Mr. Bradshaw, sir, may we help you?”

“Where’s Sabrina?” Ronny looked past his house manager and over at his housekeeping supervisor.

Elvira was as stunned as James was, but she maintained her composure too. “Miss Hawkins is cleaning her assigned rooms, sir.”
