“Let’s get you out of here,” Ronny said and she didn’t argue. They made their way out of that house of horrors. Sully and Tex did the same. It was a crime scene now.
They could hear sirens in the far distance as they sat on the top step of the front porch and waited for the Police. “Mac apparently called 911,” Ronny said.
“You and Brina can leave,” Sully said. “I know how you don’t want Bradshaw Technologies to be tainted by all this.”
“Too late for that,” said Ronny. “I want the story to come out. I want Sabrina completely exonerated.”
Brina looked at him and squeezed his knee. “Thanks.” Then she stared at her father’s lifeless body across the yard.
“Feel strange doesn’t it?” Ronny asked her.
But she shook her head. “Doesn’t feel like anything,” she said. “That’s what’s strange to me.”
Ronny stared at her. His timing was never perfect, but it seemed like as good a time now as any. “Sabrina?” he said to her.
She didn’t look at him. “Yes?”
He exhaled. “Will you marry me?”
Brina didn’t miss a beat, and she didn’t stop looking at her father. “Of course,” she said as if it went without saying.
Ronny smiled. It was that easy? “Really?”
Brina smiled and looked at him. “Really,” she said, and they both kissed.
Then Ronny looked up at Sully with a big grin on his face. “I’s about to be married now,” he said as if he was straight out ofThe Color Purple. And Brina laughed through her tears. He didn’t even get the line right. But it didn’t matter. Even Sully was laughing. It was the saddest, happiest day.
EPILOGUE
It was the wedding of the century. At least that was how Ronny saw it. He stood in front of the jam-packed church filled with his friends and business associates, and all of his brothers’ friends and business associates. Sabrina even had people there for her too. From Elvira Dash and James Prado, to Tex Graylin and the entire housekeeping staff. And all of the maids, except for Gail whose lawsuit was tossed out of court, were her bridesmaids. Elvira was her matron of honor. It was wonderful to Ronny. Bradshaw Manor, now with Sabrina as the matron of the house, was out in force.
Ronny could hardly contain his joy. He and his best man, Reynolds McNabb, kept taking happy glances at each other. He was doing the same with Zack and Perry, who were among his groomsmen. Because not one of them, including Ronny himself, ever thought this day would ever come.
And then the doors opened in the back and everyone stood on their feet. And there she was,Sabrina, dressed like an angel, Ronny thought, in her bright white, couture gown with bugle beads, diamond beads, and sequins, all gorgeously atop embroidered Iace applique with dramatic fluttering layers that overlayed her huge train. Made for her by the top designer in the world, it fit her like a glove.
Ronny's heart was fluttering too when he took one look at her in that over-the-top gorgeous gown. Her bridesmaids were in the back, helping to hold up her train, while young flower girls waited up front with baskets of flowers to disperse. And when his brother placed Brina’s arm in his arm and he began to walk her down the aisle, Ronny glanced at Zack and Perry again. Andall three brothers smiled. Sully had been her biggest skeptic. Now he was her champion.
That irony wasn’t lost on Brina, either, as the live band began playing the song she and Ronny had selected, and Sully slowly walked her down the aisle. He questioned her motives from the moment he met her. But over the past eight months they grew very close. They now were thick as thieves. It warmed Brina's heart.
But the only man on her mind in that moment was Ronny. The man who believed in her when no-one else did. He was her hero. She was welling up inside just thinking about how much she loved him.
And when the wedding singer started singing Adele'sMake You Feel My Love, as written by Bob Dylan, she couldn't take her eyes off Ronny as she slowly moved down that aisle.
“When the rain is blowing in your face,
and the whole world is on your case.
I could offer you a warm embrace.
To make you feel my love.
When the evening shadows and the stars appear.
And there is no one there to dry your tears.
I could hold you for a million years.
To make you feel my love.”
