“Baby, talk to me. Tell me what’s wrong,” I beg.
“Please take me home, just take me home,” she says and leans back.
I stare into her beautiful tear filled eyes and nod, setting her on her feet.
We get dressed quickly and head back to the barns. But the worry doesn’t cease … it grows. I don’t understand what she saw, but it terrified her, and I have no idea how to protect her from it.
When we get the horses put away, Eliana and I head up the hill to the house.
She won’t look at me, and my stomach is in knots. I follow behind and almost bump into her when she comes to a stop at the top of the hill.
There’s a Sheriff’s truck parked and a deputy I don’t recognize leaning against it. He probably lives in the next town over.
“Can I help you?” I ask him.
He uncrosses his legs and smugly walks over to me.
“Killian Lennox, you are under arrest for the murder of two women, in the first degree…” The deputy keeps talking, but I no longer listen as he turns me around and pulls my arms behind my back, slapping cuffs on me.
Eliana sobs and stares at me with even more fear in her eyes.
Blood rushes in my ears, and it feels as if I’ve been put in slow motion.
“No!” Eliana yells, coming for me.
“He didn’t do anything! He didn’t do this! You know it, you bastard!”
The deputy grabs her arm, and she winces, and that wakes me up.
“Get your hands off her!” I growl.
He releases her, and she grabs my face, kissing me. “I will get you out. You didn’t do this. It’s the truth, and they know it!”
“Be careful. He’s still out there, baby. Please, please be careful,” I beg her.
Her lip trembles and her beautiful blue eyes glitter with tears.
I want to fight. I want to scream, but I know it’ll make it all worse.
He shoves me in the truck, and I stare at Eliana as the tears stream down her face and she wraps her arms around herself protectively.
“I love you!” I yell.
She puts her hand on the window, and I touch my forehead to it. Willing the panic to stay down because I can’t let her see me break.
The truck pulls away, and I look behind me as she stands on the gravel driveway, getting smaller and smaller, until I can’t see her anymore. But the only thing on my mind is, I’m not there to protect her. Some psycho piece of shit wants her, and I’m not there to put him in the ground before he can get to her.
God help me, I will break out of jail to get to her.
Chapter fifty-six
Eliana
Themomenttheyareout of sight, I pick Killian’s hat up off the ground and run into the house, grabbing his truck keys. I’ve never had to get anyone out of jail before, but I think they need some kind of bail money, and I don’t have much, but I have to try.
Squeezing, the steering wheel, I breathe through the anxiety plaguing and poisoning my thoughts. The questions are making my mind spin, and I’m forcing myself not to break down with the constant voice of the Spirits. I have to get him out. Not only because I’m terrified that my stalker is going to grab me, but because Killian didn’t do this. He’s not a murderer.
It doesn’t matter if I don’t have a good standing in this town. The truth is the truth, and it needs to be heard.
