Fox chuckled as Savannah turned back to me, missing Nash rollinghis eyes at her.

For the next hour, Fox and I told Savannah all about New York. Hecame to sit next to me, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me so my back was against his chest. It was like he couldn’t help but touch me, but it was a feeling I reciprocated.

Every time Nash tried to speak, Savannah shushed him, determinedto hear all about what we’d done. By the time we’d finished telling them, Nash had joined us at the island, scowling at his wife the whole time.

“Notthatit isn’t always good to see your face, Junior, but you saidthere was something you needed to discuss?”Fox said after he’d made a fresh round of coffee.

“Yeah. Not with you though, dickwad,”Nash snorted.“We’ve gotsomething to ask Cora.”

My brows shot up, my gaze darting from Savannah to Nash, andthento Fox who lookedjustas confused as I did.

“Me?”I asked hesitantly, wondering what on earth they could possiblyask of me.

Savannah reached for my hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.“It’snothing to worry about, Cora. We’re having a party next week at Onyx. It’s a kinda celebration to announce the pregnancy, and we were wondering if you’d be able to make cakes for it?”

I blinked several times, surethatI hadn’t heard correctly.“You wantme to make cakes for your party?”I replied, dumbfounded.

“Uh-huh. We were thinking maybe a hundred cupcakes. Or if you’dprefer, justone big cake if that’s easier?”She beamed brightly at me, an expectant look on her face.

Stunned into silence, my jaw dropped open. For a few seconds, Iforgot how to breathe as self-doubt strangled me.“A hundred? No…I…couldn’t…I can’t.”

“Baby girl, breathe,”Fox said, leaning forward to whisper in my ear.The warmth emanating from him engulfed me, calming me fractionally.“Ifyou don’t want to, you don’t have to. But youcando it, Cora. Don’t doubt yourself. You’ve proved time and time again you can do anything you put your mind to, youjusthave to believe in yourself.”

I sucked in a much needed breath, letting Fox’s encouraging wordssink in.“I wouldn’t want to mess up and ruin your party,”I replied feebly.

“Oh, honey. You wouldn’t mess up,”Savannah said, squeezing myhand again.“Fox has been harping on about how delicious your cakes are, and honestly? There is no one else I’d rather have make cakes for the celebration. We’ll pay you for it as well, it could be the first step toward opening Cora’s Cakes.”

She remembered.

The warm feelingthatI usually felt when I was near Fox cascadedthrough me as I stared at Savannah’s friendly face.

I didn’t want to let her down. Savannah and Nash had been nothingbut kind to me from the minute I met them. Making cakes for their party was the least I could do to repay them for everything they’d done for me.

“I guess I could spend the next few days practicing,”I said slowly, mymind churning over with different recipes and ideas for cake toppers.“I could make some samples for you to try to make sure you like them.”

“Perfect!”Savannah replied, clapping her hands again.

“Does this mean I’m invited to your party?”Fox said, pulling me backinto his arms again and kissing me on the cheek.

“Only if you promise not to streak naked through the casino like youdid at the party we had in Miami a few years ago,”Nash replied, his face twisting into a look of mock disgust.

Chapter 19

Fox

Nash wisely drove us to Diaz’s casino. My attention was completelydistracted by how I was going to handle the meeting.

The second I offered to pay Freddy’s debts off, Diaz would know why.His reaction at seeing Cora’s photo played over in my head, along with his comment about how much fun he’d have breaking her in, and I couldn’t stop my hands from balling into a fist.

Diaz was a vicious man. There was a chance he’d refuse my offer topay Freddy’s debts, and if he did, I’d be putting Cora at risk. But it was a chance I had to take.

Diaz might have been savage, but he was also a businessman, and I hoped he would have enough sense to knowthatNash and I could make his life fucking difficult if he didn’t play nice.

“You need to keep a cool head, Fox,”Nash said, not tearing his gazeaway from the freeway in front of us, but no doubt sensing the tension radiating from me.

“I’m aware,”I huffed, unfurling my fists.“I can’t help but wonder if I’mdoing the right thing though. You didn’t see the way Diaz’s eyes lit up when he sawthatpicture of Cora. What if I’m putting her at more risk by showing my hand?”

Nash turned to look at me briefly, pity flashing in his eyes.“What’s thealternative? You keep her locked up at your house for the rest of her life in case Diaz gets wind she only lives a few miles from him? Or you hire a bodyguard to be glued to her like a shadow anytime she wants to go out?”
