“There!” He clutched his chest. “He’s there! Onyx feels confused. He’s really faint, but he’s there.”

Dante let out a long breath. “Good.”

“I still have nothing,” Ash grumbled.

“Can you use me?” Nico clutched the little box, more helpless than he’d ever been in his adult life. “Can you track Onyx through our connection rather than his magic?”

Ash’s eyes widened. “Let me try. If you were a demon, you’d be able to find Onyx regardless of anti-tracking spells. Witch magic isn’t as strong, even with the mating bond. But if I can tap into your connection, maybe we can combine the two.”

Nico reached for Ash, and they clasped hands. “We have to hurry. If he’s been captured by the demons hunting you, they could kill him at any moment!” Nico didn’t fear dying. He feared a universe without his mate.

They’d only just found each other.

“We’ll rescue him in time,” Dante promised, even as fear lined his face.

Sweat broke out on Nico’s brow. He couldn’t lose Onyx, and wouldn’t let him down. Nico concentrated on his mate’s presence, on Onyx’s fear and anger jolting painfully down the bond.

Ash’s magic warmed Nico’s hand, the heat radiating up his arm.

How far away could Onyx have been taken? Nico wasn’t sure how long he’d lain on the roof. What if he, Ash, and Dante were outnumbered when they finally found Onyx? There were too many ways for this to go wrong.

Nico clung to Onyx’s presence as Ash’s magic flared. They’d find him in time, even if they had no idea what they were walking into. They had to.

ONYX

Onyx pulledfrom Luc’s embrace, retracting his wings. He couldn’t let hope distract him. There’d be time to figure out if Luc was genuine later.

He cleared his throat, uncomfortable under Luc’s gaze. “How are we going to get out of here? They’ll sense us unpicking the spells trapping us.”

“True. They’ll come running and we’ll have to overpower them.”

“That’s the plan?”

“Got a better one? I’m not waiting for them to return, giving them enough time to prepare for whatever they’re planning to do next.”

Onyx crossed his arms. “We need to destroy the shield covering the doorway, or there won’t be any chance of overpowering them.” But there was no way they could destroy the shield before their captors sensed what they were doing.

Luc inspected the wall to his right, pressing a palm to the stone. “We could smash through here. I don’t feel a shield in the stone.”

Onyx inspected the wall with his demon sense. Luc was right. “We might end up in another cell.”

“Or in a room with Valac. But the longer we do nothing, the longer we give them to come back and kill us.”

A chill shot down Onyx’s spine. “Valac said they were going to capture Dante and Ash first.”

“And you believe that? It would be smarter to get our executions out of the way.”

“Hey. Whose side are you on?”

Luc’s lip curled. “I’m just pointing out the obvious. Don’t act like I’ve ever plotted a permanent death.”

“Whatever. Let’s get out of here.”

Luc grabbed Onyx’s wrist. “Wait. Let me protect you.”

Onyx snatched his hand away. “I can protect myself.”
