Chapter Forty-One
Will
“Why don’t we stop and get some snacks first?” Jason suggested.
“Yeah, okay. I could stand to do some stretches for my back too.”
A sign for a gas station with a minimart beckoned us at the next exit. Ten minutes later we were back in the car. Stretching hadn’t really done much for me, so I elected to lie down across the back seat. I wedged Dave’s box in the footwell and pulled the top open so I could pet him. Dave seemed uninterested in exploring the car.
“What’s the plan for today? How far are we going?”
Jason answered, “I thought we’d see if we could make it to Oklahoma. And I want to swing east or west a little for part of the way so we don’t stay on the direct route from Fargo to Austin, just in case the shooter was able to track Will’s plane ticket.”
“Hey, Spence is in Oklahoma right now! Tulsa is east of us, isn’t it?” Cole sat up straight and bounced in his seat. “We should stop and see him!”
Jason was shaking his head before Cole even stopped talking. “Too risky.”
“Who’s Spence?”
“He’s a good friend. Atrustworthyfriend.” He glared at Jason. “Spence was my stunt double and sometimes my body double for most of the movies I did in the past few years. He knows about me and Jason, and he hasn’t told anyone.”
“Cole, Spence accidentally outing you is not the same as him accidentally spilling our location to someone who’s trying to kill Will.” Jason did have a point there.
“Hmmph.” Cole sat back and crossed his arms. “He’s in Tulsa helping his mom move into a nursing home. That means her house is empty. We’d have a really private place to stay.”
Jason chewed on this for a while. Then something occurred to me. “Would a body double for Cole be useful in the big plan to catch the shooter?”
Cole gasped. “Well, I’m not sure exactly how, but hell, yes!” He spun toward Jason again, shaking with excitement. “Jason, it would be perfect. We could get doubles for the two of you as well. Then we’d be able to draw the shooter out no matter which direction he was coming from!”
Jason started to speak, then stopped. Then he opened his mouth again, then shut it. I grinned. “Let me think about it,” he finally allowed.
“Yes!” Cole crowed.
Jason scowled. Then he cleared this throat and said in a calm voice, “Cole, you and I owe Will something.”
Cole’s face lit up. “The list! The list of naughty things he couldn’t participate in while we were apart!” Oh, yes. My back was killing me, but my dick was fully on board with Cole’s list.
“Oh, um, sorry. That’s not what I was referring to.” Cole deflated. And so did my dick. “Um, we do owe him those things, definitely, but maybe not while we’re driving down the highway?” I laughed, but Cole continued to pout. “But, I guess we can do a little role play for what I have in mind?” Cole perked back up at that. So did my dick.
“Okay. I’m good with that.” Cole glanced back at me. “How about you, Will?”
“Uh, sure?” I mean role play sounded interesting, and it’s not like I had anything else to do.
“Good. Cole, I’m going to start off with you, and then we can switch roles.” I couldn’t see Cole’s face, but I was confused.
“Got it.” Cole sounded confident.
Jason’s voice changed. It was deeper, more authoritative. “Mr. Washburn, I’m Detective Shelton and I need to ask you some questions.
“Okay, Detective. Anything you need.” Cole put on a breathy Marilyn Monroe voice.
“Now, I know this is a hard question, but I need you to tell me if there’s anyone who has any reason to try to kill you.”
I sucked in my breath. Was he going to make Cole answer cop-type questions? This was more than just dating histories.
Cole gave me a grin before looking seriously at Jason and answering in his normal voice. “Well, I might have some crazy fans who aren’t happy about me retiring. Um, and there’s always Gino Bianchi. He seemed really pissed off when I wouldn’t sleep with him in high school. But that was long before I met either of my current boyfriends, so hopefully he’s over it by now.”
“What about your money?” Jason asked.
