Craigstraightened in his chair. “I’msorry.Itnever occurred to me you might want pictures.Itook some too.”Hegrinned, no doubt remembering the fun he’d had pulling his little prank.
Igave him my best quelling glare, but his grin got bigger. “Theair filter’s in my car.Let’sgo get it.Areyou sure you don’t need help installing it?”
“Thanks, butIam capable of standing on a ladder for two minutes.”Ipicked up my cane and levered myself out of the chair.
“Hey,IknowIkeep asking, butFosterandIare hosting game night tomorrow.Youshould come.”Craigglanced atGreg. “Samefor you,Greg.Youdon’t have any excuse not to come anymore.Theboth of you need to get out of the house and interact with people.Youknow, socialize.”
Inarrowed my eyes atCraig.Hecrossed his arms and raised his eyebrows, looking back and forth between me andGreglike he was trying to channelFosterinterrogating a couple of suspects.Hislack of height and curly blond hair undermined his authority though, making him look more cute than intimidating.
ButCraigwasn’t wrong.Lisa, my therapist, had been nagging me to hang out with people more.Andit had been over a week sinceI’dseenFoster.AndFoster’scop buddies were tolerable.
“Fine.I’llcome.”Craig’sface lit up, andIknew what he was thinking. “Justthis once though.I’mnot promising more.”
“That’lldo.”Craigturned toGregexpectantly. “Well?”
Gregsighed. “Fine.”Craigpumped his fists in the air and,Ikid you not, made awhoopsound so loud you would’ve thought he’d won the lottery.
GregandIrolled our eyes at each other.
Gregheld up a finger. “Malcolm, why don’tIcome pick you up?I’lltake you home whenever you’re ready.”Gregcut his eyes toCraig, then glanced down at my cane and back up to meet my eyes, raising one eyebrow at me.Ibarely managed to keep a straight face.Gregwanted to use my leg as an excuse to leave early.Iwas completely on board.
“Sure.I’dappreciate it.”Weexchanged phone numbers.
Aftergetting the air filter fromCraig—and it was definitely fancy, a big aluminum square—Ifelt lighter thanIhad in a while.Icouldn’t wait to look atCallie’sphotos.AndGregmight turn into a new friend.Wouldn’tthat be unusual for me?
Igot in theBuick, stowed my cane and the air filter on the passenger seat, then pulled out my phone.Iopened my text messages and downloaded the photosCalliehad sent me.
Choosingthe one with the view of the front of my cast,Izoomed in on the cheerful pink unicorn with its multicolored horn ejaculating a rainbow which dissolved into stars and smaller unicorns.
Ismiled spontaneously for the first time in what seemed like months.
