Oh, crap.

Dreadfilled my body asIslowly clicked on the photo.

Hewent byRockGod3000and he was gorgeous.

IthinkIstarted salivating as soon as my eyes landed on the bronzed skin of his bare chest.Hehad abs for days.Alock of deep black hair fell carelessly over his forehead, and his chiseled jaw was covered in just the right amount of stubble.Icould almost feel the scritch it would make against my cheek and neck.Hisdark eyes smoldered at the camera and promised if we went out, our clothes wereguaranteedto come off.

Themessage string between “me” andRockGod3000showed him to be charming, a little flirty but respectful.Hesaid he loved animals but couldn’t have any in his apartment.Andhe hadn’t sent any dick pics—one of the only hard limitsI’dgivenCole, at least before the watersports question.

Well, heck.Hehad to havesomethingwrong with him.Itried to remind myself how all the others had looked good beforeI’dmet them too.

Iforwarded the photo and screenshots of his profile toCal.We’dtexted a few times sinceSteve’sparty the other night, andI’dpromised to keep him updated onCole’sadventures pretending to be me.Calmight see a red flagIwas missing.

Cal

Idon’t know, dude.Helooks pretty good to me.AlthoughI’mhaving trouble looking at anything other than those abs, lol.Butwhat could it hurt to meet him for dinner?

Whatcouldit hurt?

Iwas in.

Colehad come through with a date.

* * *

“You’redifferent in person than you seemed in our chats,”Jaime—a.k.a.RockGod3000—remarkedThursdaynight asIsavored my mushroom risotto.

Uhoh. “Howdo you mean?”

Hetilted his head, highlighting the sharp edges of his artfully stubbled jaw. “Ithink you were a little more outgoing, perhaps?Isanything wrong?”

Well, crap.Colecould not be allowed to meetJaime.Ever.Orat least not until years after we were married, possibly with children.Colewould have to understand.

“Oh, no,”IassuredJaime. “It’sa little easier for me to be myself online.Firstdates make me nervous, sorry.”

“Notto worry,” he winked. “I’lllook forward to seeing what you’re like on the second date.”

Okay, that line was pretty cheesy, but it still made me sigh happily, wiggling a little in my chair. This, or ratherhe, was definitely worth all the aggravationColehad caused me.

Wewere about forty-five minutes into our date, andIcouldn’t believe how well it was going. He’dbeen on time, meeting me in front of the restaurant. He’dchosen a hip newItalianfusion place all ofAustinhad been raving about.Itwas a bit of a drive from my home inBentOak, but the food was as amazing as advertised.

Jaime, unlike me, was exactly how he’d seemed in his messages: charming but not pushy.Hedidn’t act disappointedIhadn’t magically turned into aHarryStyleslookalike before our date. He’dput his hand on my lower back as we’d walked to the table, and he hadn’t said anything whenI’dtripped over a woman’s purse that had been lying on the ground. He’djust supported my arm and helped me keep my footing.Whenwe’d reached the table he’d pulled my chair out for me.He’dasked about my job and my life, and he didn’t yawn through my answers.Whenhe spoke about himself he was funny and self-deprecating and always followed up with a question about me.

Thatalone put this date head and shoulders—and look at those shoulders, yum—above any other dateI’dhad in the past two years at least.

Jaimewas an architect at a firm inAustinand he liked to go rock climbing.NotsomethingIsaw myself doing in this lifetime, but it was a common, unremarkable hobby, which was a relief.Ihadn’t yet managed to confirm whetherJaimebelieved in vampires, but at least he didn’t own a monkey.

Ikept wondering if he usually went for chubby guys, but he stared at me hungrily, as if he was imagining me naked.Imight not be ready for that tonight, but darn if it wasn’t nice to have the option.
