“Felix?”Isaid whenIopened the door to the laundry room.

 “Inhere,” he called.ThenIheard, “Shit!Fuck!”

Ihurried into the kitchen.Blacksmoke billowed up from a frying pan.Shouting, “Fuck, fuck!”Felixused a hot pad to lift the pan off the burner and dump it into the sink.Thesmell of charred chicken filled the room.

“Areyou okay?”Iscanned him, looking for injuries.

Felixreached over and turned off the burner, then just stood there, staring at the stove.Hehadn’t even glanced at me sinceI’dcome in.

“I’msorry.”Hisvoice was so lowIcould barely hear him.

Iset my laptop bag on the counter and walked a little closer. “Shithappens.Butlet me make sure you didn’t get burned or anything.”Itugged at his arm.Heresisted at first, but finally turned and gave me the most resigned, defeated expressionI’dever seen on his face.

“What’swrong?Youcan’t be that upset about the chicken.”Ihoped to hell this had something to do with his squirrely behavior this past week.Iwas ready for some answers.

Hepressed his lips together and shook his head. “No, it’s not the chicken.”

Ileaned my cane against the counter and put my arms around him. “Whateverit is,I’mhere for you.”

Heclosed his eyes and hugged me back. “Iwas trying to butter you up by making dinner beforeIhad to ask you something.”

“Youdon’t have to butter me up.”Ipaused. “Okay, well, we could explore that when we’re naked sometime.”Felixcoughed out a laugh. “Youcan ask me anything.”Hedidn’t respond.Itilted my upper body back and smoothed the hair off his forehead. “Whydon’t we go over to the couch?”

Henodded and we parted enough soIcould grab my cane and lead the way, butIkept my other arm around his waist.

Hewasn’t breaking up with me.Hewouldn’t have tried to make dinner for that. Also, it was only this morning after we’d made love when he’d looked at me likeIwas everything he’d ever wanted.

Isettled on the couch and gotFelixsnuggled in along my side.

“There.Nowyou can ask me your question.”

Felixturned his head and mumbled into my chest, “I’mscared to.Idon’t want things between us to change.”

 Mystomach dropped.Lisawas right.Asusual, goddammit.

Felixshould be confident in our relationship.Buthe wasn’t.Hewasn’t sure of my feelings for him.

Ihad to tell him.I’dbeen putting it off andIwasn’t proud of why.I’dbeen waiting forFelixto declare his feelings first soIwouldn’t have to take the risk.

Itried not to tense up soFelixwouldn’t know how nervousIwas.Hah, he wasn’t the only one who was scared.

Ikissed his beautiful hair. “Wouldit help ifItold youIlove you?”

Felixstopped breathing and slowly lifted his head. “Youdo?”Thosegray eyes were wide, his lips stretching into a smile.

Ididn’t fight the grin overtaking my face. “Ido.Ilove you.”

Hegrinned back and his arm squeezed my chest. “Ilove you too.”

Iwent in for a kiss.Itwas almost chaste, with only the tiniest touch of our tongues.Butwe both smiled through it.

ButthenMariposadecided to join us, leaping with exceptional aim.Hertwo front paws, with her entire twenty pounds behind them, landed on my dick.

“Fuck!”Itore my mouth fromFelix’sand jackknifed my body in a far, far too late attempt to protect my tender bits.

Mariposa, startled by my reaction, dug her claws into my thigh and launched herself across the living room.Sheskidded around the corner and disappeared down the hall toward the bedroom.Iwas left gasping in pain on the couch.

“Areyou okay?Didher claws get you?”Icould tellFelixwas trying not to laugh.Iwas torn between being offended he wasn’t more concerned for the well-being of my junk and being relieved he wasn’t feeling so down any longer.
